I received Apo-Summicron 75/2 (bought on ebay from therock7033). The lens was very stiff to focus initially (lack of exercise?). In addition to focusing stiffness it seems to have another problem. For some reasons it brings up 35/28mm frames instead of 50/75.

I have another sample of this lens and it brings up 50/75mm frames. The seller emailed me that it is "normal" for this lens, eventhough M8 manual states opposit. The lens was advertised as Mint.

Is this behavior normal for summicron 75/2? I'd like to return the lens but the seller wants me to pay ebay/paylal charges and shiping cost in case if I return the lens.

The stiffness must be common in a brand new lens because I bought mine new and it was stiff initially but has loosened up and is now smooth. However, the fact that it brings up the wrong framelines obviously means that it needs to be serviced and therefore is not mint as advertised. The seller is being unreasonable. You might want to use Ebay's dispute resolution. It takes a while but the odds are in yor favor.

I bought mine new and it brought up the wrong framelines. Took it to Leica NJ and they fixed it on the spot. The technician said a number of the 70s had shipped with that problem.

So the seller may not be lying about it being mint. Of course that may do you no good if you have to pay to get it fixed.

No it is not normal. The mount is wrong. someone changed it or did something to the original.

I'd contact eBay about it

We know that the gnomes in Solms are not infallible. I bought a new 24/2.8 asph which brought up the correct frame lines, but it was coded as a 21/2.8 asph. I just returned it to the dealer and got a correctly coded one.

As far as returning the lens to the seller, the seller should refund the full amount the OP paid, including shipping, and pay for the return shipping cost.

Depending on the seller's return policy (maybe he didn't have one) if a buyer wanted to return an item it is not unreasonable for a seller to have the buyer pay return shipping and only then refund the money. When I once returned an item to Amazon (which is a huge seller in comparison to ebay vendors which are usually individuals or small businesses) I had to pay the postage myself. And I got my refund once Amazon got the item back. That's seller protection.

Now whether or not the seller knew the lens had problems is another story. Good luck with Ebay dispute resolution. If you paid with your credit card, you'd have better luck with your credit card company.

I dug a bit and found your auction: LINK

He accepts returns and states his terms (as you mentioned above with the fees). The seller is just covering his costs, as with selling a $2k plus item on ebay with paypal, the fees alone are around 10%.

The lens has blank warranty cards. It's a drag, but why not let Leica NJ handle it? Maybe they put the wrong mount on it during the coding and it is calling up the wrong frame lines.

Just looked at the auction site linked above. Looks like Leica goofed when they changed the mount to code the lens. If you're happy with the lens otherwise, and if you have or can get the paperwork for the coding, then it may be easy to resolve the matter with NJ.

Thanks everyone.

It looks like there is a problem with the lens mount, so the lens has t be repaired by leica.

This person is not an official Leica dealer, so I'm not sure whether warranty will work or not. I'm not even sure where the lens came from. There is no original invoice.

The lens was described as MINT with all original packing materials. The lens I received had no Leicas leather case and wrong/damaged mount. The seller was supposed to check the item before shipping it to me. I have no time no desire to deal with leicas warranty. I've paid for a lens in a mint condition. I should not pay for seller's mistake. Ebay leaves me no choice other than to absorb the cost of shipping (about $50 total). The seller is quite arrogant/obnoxious. My advice to everyone: avoid this seller and Apo-Summicron 75/2 with this serial number.

Clearly the lens was NOT as advertised. And if you don't have the original receipt, or at least know where it was bought and when, the included warranty card and passport warranty means absolutely NOTHING. Both the standard warranty and passport have to be registered within 30 day of purchase from a authorized Leica dealer. Otherwise it has NO warranty.

The box and foam in the box mean nothing also because without the leather case the lens just bounces around inside the box. The foam parts in the box hold the case that holds the lens.

This is to bad because you could of bought a new 75/2 APO ASPH from B&H as they have/had at least one in stock as of Monday of this week.

Good luck.

Actually I bought something from that seller, I think a 39mm UV/IR Leica filter.

Did you use a credit card to buy via PayPal? Ship it back to him with just signature confirmation, or any other trackable method so you have evidence he received the return. If he doesn't refund you the way you want, call your credit card company. In the meantime do initiate the dispute resolution with ebay and PayPal.

Well,

you are not alone: last 2 Leica lenses I got on eBay I had to return, too.

Last winter I got the used 21mm, and when I unpacked it I noticed bubbles on the rear element . The seller took it back saying he did not notice (???), gave me a full refund but I had to wait 6 months to get the refund from Canada customs. I got the other 21 shortly after that and that was great...

The second lens is 75lux I got last month: I trusted the seller's description saying that front element had (hardly) removable "dust specs"... When I got the lens I discovered that the "damage" was permanent and that surface coat has scratches. I let the the seller know and he replied that he will refund the amount but he noted that his and mine description values are quite different... After receiving the lens back from me, he sold it the following week to some other "lucky" buyer for more $$. Oh yes: I sent the request to Canadian customs for refund. Now I have to wait another 6 months.

At the end, I found another 75lux on Craig list in Vancouver. This one is as NEW, got it with no issues...:)

Interesting. I never bother filling out or sending in cards. Recently returned MP to Australian importer/repairer for service and repair. I think I sent it off with dealers receipt in my name but I might not have. CLA no charge and warranty repair was honoured no problem. Cost me postage to destination. Different in US?
