peggers Posted October 10, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted October 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Â Since getting my M8 I've been indulging in almost 100% colour work - and as such had to improve my Photoshop skills and tune my eyes in (I used to shoot almost exclusive B&W with my M6's). I've got an OK grip on curves now - using them for both luminance and hue adjustments. Â Wanted to know if people felt it was worth investing time in learning how to work LAB mode? I know there is a book dedicated to the topic by Dan Margulis. However, with the luminance and colour blending modes in PS, is there any good reasons/situations where having LAB experience is the key? I understand it can be a good mode for some colour seperation, and some recommend it for noise removal (on a&b channels) and sharpening on L (although I do very little sharpening with the M8 files!) Â Really appreaciate your perspectives - shot from Athens I took last month as a very small thank you. Â Many thanks, Phil

pemayeux Posted October 10, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted October 10, 2007 LAB mode is critical to the best sharpening technique. Â I would be interested to learn about this. As others have said, I do very little sharpening on the M8 files.
skunkworks Posted October 11, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted October 11, 2007 I've always used LAB because I get better color control, but I might be considered a freak since I find it more intuitive than RGB.
Jaifoto Posted October 11, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted October 11, 2007 Katrin Eismann taught me years ago to use LAB mode for sharpening. Sharpen using USM on the Lightness channel, then apply a Gaussian Blur of a radius of 2.0 pixels to both the A & B channels. Do a side by side test against a straight USM and you'll see less noise. fjmcsu Posted October 11, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted October 11, 2007 I use it regularly for color saturation control, not muchfor sharpening since I use the PixelGenius sharperners. That said it is asuperior wayto sharpen & increase color saturation.Having read & re-read the Margulis book I highly recommend it..
