Paradise Found

its not just lenses, when I took the plunge I bought a M6 and cron 50, and within a week I had returned it-I just could not get the hang of it and none of my then clients would have looked at 35mm film. I traded it in on a mamiya 7-the texas leica, and that was my training wheels so to speak for two years-two years of really bad pictures, until I understood what the camera was seeing.

After that I was hooked on rangefinder, and went back out and bought a M6 and 28 elmarit that I still have.

Added a 35versionIVcron-the vingnetting was too much to bear, so I sold it and plunged into the then new cron asph 35, which I still have.

It has only be acquisition from there on. Currently feeling the itch to sell 21 and 28 elmarits either for a cron28 or noct. OY!

Current paradise is found in a zeiss 25...but wondering if the Leica 24 might be better.....??

Better? No. Different? Yes. Maybe it would interesting to reread the 24s review.

Cheers,

Sean

thanks. yes I did read the review (reid the review) when it came out. I think I agree with all your conclusions, the zeiss does what I need it to now-it almost comes down to ergonomics, the different focus tab is somewhat of an issue, altho in street shooting I put it on hyperfocal f8 and set the lens to 11 and forget it. the fact that the elmarit blocks more of the finder is an issue against it. a toss up.

I know the elmarits have a different fingerprint, I really like my 28 elmarit (III), it has a long tonal scale. The zeiss does not really do that. What I appreciate about the zeiss is the clarity of the rendering, which I suspect is contrast really. Also it is solid into the corners. another split decision.

That is not my current conundrum. I have an option on either a 75 lux or noct and cannot decide if I want either, and which one. The focus throw on the 75 lux surprised me, like taking a lid off a jam jar...a whole turn. I think I would enjoy the noct more but get more actual use out of the lux. Another toss up...:)

You will get more USE out of the 75 lux. It just has more options than focal length. i can use it for a nice soft look say for a portrait than past f4 it is a razor blade for product or whatever . Here is a F 3.4 shot I did the other day with the 75 lux . Very sharp where i focused but just beatiful creamy bokeh in the OOF focus area's . The Nocti can do this but i don't trust it completely because the backgrounds can look very strange with it. the 75 lux won't do that. Pretty darn hot for 63 years old. LOL

That was my problem too. Finally, I decided to go for the 75mm Summilux. It is superb stopping down (at f/2 the sharpness is incredible), and very special wide open. The Noctilux (this was my reasoning) was very interesting wide open but not so good (in relative terms) stopping down. I thought the 75mm was a better tool, and the Noctilux a more interesting toy. My decision was conditioned by the fact that I was using the 30% discount letter. The Noctilux is now superexpensive, and that was the last chance for getting one. On the other hand, the 75mm Summilux was discontinued, and that was the last chance for getting one new. Difficult decision.

Exactly, the long tonal scale comes from the softer contrast of the older Elmarit and the sense of clarity in the Zeiss lenses comes from resolution but, yes, also the contrast. Aren't we lucky with lenses we have to choose from for the M8?

we are lucky, we have plethora of choices. Which is what this thread is really all about. Try'em out!

the conundrum over the noct vs 75 lux is in part due to the picture attached. It is made with the canon 85 1.2 at 1.2

I know the lux will be the closest too this look, but since resolution is not the game here, I can stand in the same position as I would with the 75/85 and crop the Noct to get the framing.

Other than this kind of portraiture, I never use anything longer than the 50. But I feel spending a lot of money has to have some business rationale.

I like Guy's mantra: it is not about what the client will accept, it is about what you want to deliver: in this case, for me, I kind of like what the noct does in a variety of circumstances more than the lux probably.

it gets more complicated: the 85 1.2 you see here is being used with the canon 5D and flash, outdoors, iso 400- usually 1/4000 sec, and the hi speed sync option lets you use fill flash at f1.2 at this ridiculous shutter speed. So I say to myself-what am I buying a noct for when that is the entire package I am renting here....still, like the noct. I am crazy.....:D

its funny we identify leica with not using strobe-there are good reasons to use strobe wide open- like on the noct for example-as outdoor fill. I would like to see Leica get their gear on to provide a better flash component, but that is a subject of another thread friends...

last part-in terms of contrast, which has less contrast wide open, the noct or the lux?

the canon 85 1.2 has very low contrast wide open and this is great for skin- it helps my retouching no end.

Robert, the 80R Lux and 75M Lux are prettymuch the same lens.

Here's a less attractive subject with a 80R wide open.
