Digilux 3 disappeared from B&H web site

... as far as I am concerned, my real investment at this point is directly into the 4:3 system, and while I love my digilux 3, the broad involvement of different companies in the 4:3 system make me feel very good about continuing my investment. and the future viability of this system.

 

You've hit the nail on the head there Bo - this is the advantage and the real sweet spot for the 4/3 system. I'm of the same mind - I'm also looking upon my investment as those beautiful lenses which do not change half as quickly as the bodies, but will always remain compatible with the latest and greatest of them.

You're probably right Simon --- they won't be able to directly rebadge the E-3. But it does appear there's a fair amount of cross-development (or cross licensing) happening between all members of the 4/3 consortium. For example, the "supersonic" wave filter that provides the anti-dust feature on the L1 and Digilux 3 is an Olympus creation. So even if Leica ends up re-badging a Panasonic, if a new Panasonic dSLR (*not* the L10)reflects the innovations the E-3 will apparently be bringing, that wouldn't be too bad.

 

For the record, I was (at one time) a fan of Oly's 4/3 cameras as well ... Jeff.

 

I've no clue to what had happened between Olympus and Kodak but IMO the downturn started when Olympus adopted Panasonic's MOS sensor ... I doubt it's a deal under the table so only after that Panasonic would come on board.

 

I'm not sure how many of you would agree with me ... the Panasonic sensor is really lacking the punch of the Kodaks used in E1, E300.

 

Everyone who has worked in Japan will not argue on that Panasonic is really just a Sony wannabe ...

looks wise, I liked L1 better, most stuff looks better in black

but i guess time rolls on and with it comes improvements in technology. The Panasonic sensor design found with it more gains from the Kodak itterations, the nMOS wiring which only requires half the wiring of CMOS release more sensor real estate for use in larger wells.

 

Its been said that it puts the well sizes back to the 7.5Mp sensor.

4/3rds Olympus E3 = 41,563 (10.1Mp); 243 sq mm

4/3rds Olympus E330 = 30,864 (7.5Mp) 243 sq mm

APSC Nikon D300 = 33,300 (12.3Mp) 369 sq mm

APSC Nikon D40 = 16,260 (6Mp) 369 sq mm

APSC Canon 40D = 30,792 (10.1Mp) 328.56 sq mm

APSC Canon 450D = 37,195 (12.2Mp) 328.56 sq mm

FF Canon 1DsMkIII= 24,53700 (21.2Mp) 864 sq mm

FF Canon 5D = 14,814; (12.8Mp) 864 sq mm

 

So now we have the additional resolution of a 10.1Mp sensor, with the DR qualities of a larger well site design. This places E3 in the capable stakes of 40D and 450D, and I can tell you you sure notice the difference in noise

Same here Bo. I've purchased two Olympus Zuiko lenses in the (about) one year I've had the D3 --- the 7-14mm and the 50-200mm. Oh, and the 1.3 teleconverter as well. I'm very impressed with Olympus, and would have no hesitation in buying an E system body from them. I'm still partial to the red dot, but if Leica doesn't keep pace, or prices the Digilux 4 unreasonably, I see an E-3 in my future.

 

BTW, your safari pictures are excellent. I looked at them a week or two ago, and just did again now. I'm currently planning a trip to South Africa for next fall, and although the primary focus will be Cape Town and the winelands, I'm going to try to work in a couple of days on a game reserve.

Hi Jeff & Bo,

 

I have the Digilux-3, a Summilux and now purchased the Olympus 50-200mm SWD, the 50mm f2 macro, EC20 teleconverter, FL50 flash unit and next on my list is the 7-14mm lens - so no concerns about Olympus quality and I also would not hesitate to buy an Olympus body once the technology is more markedly different from the Digilux-3 (apart from Pixel count). I know I will miss the feel of the Digilux-3 camera, the color rendition, the aperature ring, the placement of the mechanical-style dials/buttons - but quality-wise I would not have any scruples.
