jonoslack Posted October 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi There You may remember that a few weeks ago Wilson Laidlaw posted a note to the effect that he was having trouble with the stubby weight of his Noctilux, and would like to do a deal. Well, he came to lunch, and took away my granny, and various other items of value, and I'm now the proud posessor of a Noctilux. I'm in heaven - I LOVE it - it seems perfectly okay to focus, and the dreamy results at f1 are quite different from anything I've seen before. It was a dreek afternoon, and I didn't get out until 5, so it was a perfect time to put it through it's paces. I know that your supposed to use it for dark city scenes, but but . . . . (f1) Even the boss is pleased (well, no cash changed hands!): (f1.4) So, a big public thank you from me to Wilson, who went through the pain of sending the thing back to Solms to get it focusing properly. In a few months you'll go through a stage of thinking, 'This lens is big and heavy and has lots of aberrations unlike modern asph floating element etc etc lenses and its worth a lot of money and...'. I keep a Canon lens close at hand - preferably my 300L - to hit myself with when I have such thoughts. I've had those thought about my Canon 50/1.0 but when it works, 'From my cold dead fingers." Hi Mark I'm not really very good at nailing precision issues, but I went out and took 100 photos between f1 and f2.8, and there were some focusing mistakes, but very few (and they certainly could have been my fault). The focusing throw is quite big, which is a bit of a challenge, but the weight and size of the thing is trivial after my years of fast zoom lenses on big SLR's. I hope yours comes back perfect - surely Solms are getting better at sorting these issues, I suspect they were much less prevalent in the days of film M's. HI Paul you could be right - but if it's giving me interesting photos with a dreamy bokeh, and it's not impossible to focus I think I might be able to live with it! With focusing the canon 85 1.2 I often found leaving the focus set and leaning in until it was right was easier than actually turning the focus ring. I suspect that noct is similar.
