I know that I have to order a 28 flange for my 21 to have it coded, and than change them. I also read somewhere ( and I can't find the thread ) that I can't change it on the 28 myself. This confuses me - the same flange. Please can somebody point me to the thread or explain?? (I am talking Zeiss here)

Thanks

No fuss:

buy the 28/90 flange, send it JM for coding. Once it's back paint the code (all but the one - screw hole). Replace the flange by your self ( no problems... Just use proper tools). And once you mount the flange, fill in the last (screw) hole with white paint...Done!:D

Steven -- You have been exceptionally helpful in the past on how to paint the code in Milich flanges. It made all the difference for my successes. I wonder if you would be willing to take the time to explain how you switch ZM flanges. Specifically, what tools do you use? How do you get past the problem of ZM flange screws being glued? Finally, and most importantly, how do you readjust focus for the lens/ new flange combination?

Thank you for any insights. Tom P.

Tom,

I am glad I was of any help:D

First, I used small screwdriver of the proper size (very critical!!). The head of screwdriver has to fit 100% on to the screw head... Second I clamped the screwdriver handle with "smart" pliers (with spring grip) and used pliers to turn the screwdriver off while pressing the screwdriver firmly in it's place (very important!!). Turn very slowly, and firmly in order to loosen the crew. It works!

I changed 4 mounts so far on 4 different ZM lenses that I got from different suppliers or sellers. All went smoothly the same way. The secret is in the firm turn. Period.

As far as changing the flange, I did no adjustments afterward. I think that Zeiss is "blowing smoke" about their statement that lens needs to be serviced for a flange change only at their shop. All my lenses are still sharp. No issues. Nor did I ever seen any complaints from other people who did the job on their own...

The same procedure I did years ago when I got my Schneider PC 28mm with Contax mount. I found that with additional adapter for EOS this lens was out of wack because of lousy Contax/EOS adapters I had. SO I got the EOS flange for this lens on FM forum (also for sale at B&H). I did replaced the flange by my self on this lens (6 screws) and since than the performance of this particular copy has been improved greatly on my Canon 1Ds II.

So, the simple "method" works....Just do it.

Thank you very much, Steven, for the detailed and insightfull advice. I have sent 3 lenses to DAG to do the flange switching. It takes far too long. My next lens will be the 18mm f4 ZM. I already have a 28mm-framelines flange milled by Milich and coded by me. I'm ready to go as soon as I get the lens. You give me the confidence to try it.

Tom P.
