Any special filter required for the 24/2.8 ASPH?

Sean, on many shots the 35 Lux Asph has been fine with the B+W filter, but after using it for some time, I had a sufficient number of shots with a cyan cast in the corners that I switched. This is for wide-open use only. My 35 Cron Asph was fine with a B+W filter. I am not sure about the 28 Cron, but I could imagine that the 28 Elmarit Asph might also be fine.

Some of it will depend on subject and lighting types also so be careful. I personnally just went all leica and said screw it. I think i will take all my B+W filters and give them away to any one that needs them in the workshop

Hi Carsten,

Some of this will come down to lighting as well as aperture. And some combinations lead to a red drift instead of a cyan drift. If one really wants to nail the corrections, custom profiles for each lighting condition (made with Cornerfix) would be the way to go. Otherwise, the M8 in-camera corrections are approximate - usually good enough (esp. as focal length increases).

Cheers,

Sean

Hi Guy,

The only down side to that is that, with some lenses (28 mm and up), the B+W filters match the firmware better than the Hoy..Leica filters. For example, in studio tungsten light with the 28 Summicron Asph., the B+Ws match the firmware *better*. Daylight could be different.

Ditto for the Summicron 35 Aspherical.

Cheers,

Sean

That part i never tested but i also see no ill effects either. My corners seem clean all the way through the range in any lighting. Of course a lot of stuff can be hiding it too in the images, lucky for us we don't shoot white boards for a living . LOL

Tungsten light in the studio I don't use anymore its all strobes now but would not surprise me either

Exactly...and, as you and I know, that's one important reason why the Leica corrections really are "close enough" most of the time. It's also a reason that I suggest people not fret too much about using the B+W filters with longer lenses.

BTW, I'm a traditionalist, I guess, in that I like to use Tungsten for interiors so that I can see the lighting evolve as I tweak it. So, I'm using Lowel Totas, DPs, etc.

The longer stuff i agree , maybe just a touch color shift but not biggy. My biggest concern for folks is really 24mm down and i just feel the Leica will serve them better.

I mix a lot between strobes and the lighting in the room. Balanced for daylight and let the tungsten go warm.

Guy thanks for the link to the ebay listing you posted in response to my thread:

eBay

A couple of further Q's..

1. This hood screws in to the leica UV/IR filter thread right?

2. Is this hood going to be wide enough for the 24/2.8? it looks like it might be too narrow and show in the egdes

3. Is there a cap on the market that fits onto this hood?

the seller sells this:

New 55mm Metal Stack Cap - (eBay item 140149760081 end time Oct-18-07 16:12:49 PDT)

have you tried it? looks like it might fit ok

PS: I have bought the lens and got hold of the Leica E55 IR filter! -- my dealer pulled a couple of favours and got these in 24 hrs. He's the best :D

I. yes

2. No issues there

3. The one your looking at would fit a 55mm filter directly , you would need bigger to fit the lens hood . Not sure ofthat size. But a snap cap would be a good idea. See if i can get a size. i would send heavystar a note on that, he is a real nice guy and may have a solution for that part

The 24mm is extremely sharp, you will like that quality of it

I'm not sure if this has already been covered, but my experience with the 24 ASPH and B+W filters (shooting film with a standard UV) is that the hood may not always fit over the filter. If you go with a non-Leica filter, you might want to verify that the hood can be mounted successfully prior to purchase (or use a 3rd party screw-in hood).

It is also possible to file notches in a B+W filter ring so that the Leica hood will fit (I've done it and it works--you can't see the surgery with the hood attached). But this obviously will ruin any resale value for the filter.
