AGeoJO Posted October 15, 2007 Share #21 Posted October 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark, Thank you very much. Let me make sure I understand you correctly here. The filter adapter is only a single piece and you put the IR-cut glass disc (the one removed from the filter) inside the adapter (I think there is a groove for that). After that you screw in the whole shabang on the WATE. The glass disc will be wedged between the adapter and the front rim of the WATE and there is no O-ring necessary for that, correct? Do you tighten the set screw or not? Will that mess up the thread of the red thread of the WATE if you do? The O-ring is there so you can screw in the hood a little bit more tightly, just in case it doesn't line up correctly - is this correct? Again, thank you very much, Joshua
Advertisement Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hi AGeoJO, Take a look here help taking apart a uvir filter and the milch adapter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jlm Posted October 15, 2007 Share #22 Posted October 15, 2007 to clarify: there is a threaded retaining ring supplied with the adapter; unscrew it, drop in the glass, replace the retaining ring to hold the glass into the adapter. no need to touch remove the tiny screw. the glass is definitely not wedged between the adapter and the lens. AGeoJO Posted October 15, 2007 Share #23 Posted October 15, 2007 John, Thank you for your reply. Is the threaded retaining ring screwed on the adapter as it came from you? I received what appeared to be a single piece ring.... and one side there is the rubber O-ring. That's it. Thanks, Joshua
c6gowin Posted October 15, 2007 Share #24 Posted October 15, 2007 Joshua, Not to speak for John, but I asked him the same question when I got his adapter and YES, the the retaining ring was loosely threaded into the adapter as he supplied it to me. It is very small (thin) so I didn't even notice it the first time I looked into the internal threads (portion that threads onto the lens). It really is simple and elegant design. jlm Posted October 15, 2007 Share #25 Posted October 15, 2007 the threaded retaining ring is installed in about the same place as it will eventually go, inside the adapter. it is thin, .only 060" and can be overlooked. it can be distorted by squeezing unevenly, and that will make it jam, until you use even pressure. AGeoJO Posted October 16, 2007 Share #26 Posted October 16, 2007 Mark, John, Thank you. Nothing is loosely threaded from what I can see here at the office but when I get home in an hour or so, Everything looks a single solid ring.... I will use a magnifying glass and bright light. I see what could be a ring or it can be just a ledge of the ring but it is inside the set screw; with other words, if it was a ring, I have to remove the set screw first before I could unscrew that, if that is the retaining ring..... gabriel Posted October 16, 2007 Share #27 Posted October 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do not remove small set screw !!! AGeoJO Posted October 16, 2007 Share #28 Posted October 16, 2007 Yes, the retaining ring is there; I finally found it ..... . That, after I cut my finger . ...Thank you for your help, guys. Now the next step, to remove the IR-cut glass disc from the filter. Well, not quite actually, waiting for a 49mm Leica filter will be next. Thanks again, Joshua
c6gowin Posted October 16, 2007 Share #29 Posted October 16, 2007 I did not have to touch the set screw. Perhaps the retaining ring in your adapter is seated a little tighter due to shipping vibration or whatever. Like others have suggested, a rubber stopper, eraser, or jar opener may be helpful in removing the retaining ring. Mark Gowin
dseelig Posted October 16, 2007 Author Share #30 Posted October 16, 2007 The tool that John suggested works great I no longer have the address for it but John Milch does. I used the needle to take oot the rod out of the filter or what ever you call it take about 10 tries . But it worked David

marknorton Posted October 16, 2007 Share #32 Posted October 16, 2007 If you're ordering from Micro-Tools and are minded to recover your camera at some point, you will need to order one of these to remove the frame preview lever... reynoldsyoung Posted October 28, 2007 Share #33 Posted October 28, 2007 I cut the filter ring with a Dremel. Done in a flash with no damage. Just cut with the Dremel to a point where the filter ring metal that remains is paper thin...snap the remaining metal easily with your fingers and the glass is out. Probably overkill...but effective. Thanks again, Joshua Joshua, I'll be going through this with my Milich WATE adapter shortly so glad you asked about this. BTW, how long did it take for you to get your Milich adapter? I ordered mine a couple weeks ago and have not heard from John since though I have tried to email again him a few days ago with no reply. Hopefully they are not out of stock though I am still waiting on the Leica 49mm cut filter as well. Many Thanks, Ken
jlm Posted October 29, 2007 Share #35 Posted October 29, 2007 for some reason. my e-mail has bounced back a few messages; i think the server installed an anti-spam filter. please keep trying. the wate adapters will be in stock by no later than Monday, next week, if the anodizer is cooperative. jm
