c6gowin Posted October 2, 2007 Share #21 Posted October 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is a good example of the shallow depth of field from a 90 APO/APSH wide open. The light element in focus was about 15 feet away. Take a look at the wire rope (supporting the light string) in the crop below and you can see the focus plane is very shallow. EDIT: It looks like I made the images too low resolution which is causing posterization, but they still get the point across. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Hi c6gowin, Take a look here 90mm wide open. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rosuna Posted October 2, 2007 Share #22 Posted October 2, 2007 I used the APO-Summicron 90mm ASPH of a friend for a while. It is a stunning lens. Super sharp wide open. I have a 75mm Summilux. It isn't as sharp at f/1.4 as the 90mm is at f/2. The Dof is the same, if you keep the same distance to the subject. The Summilux, however, allows you to work with shorter exposure time, due to the shorter focal length and wider aperture. Vibration detroys as much details as aberrations do. I prefer the Summilux 75mm bokeh. It is more creamy and soft. The 90mm's isn't bad at all, just different. The problem with tele lenses on the M8 is focus accuracy. I am happy with my 75mm, but I am inclined to think that 50mm is the longest lens for comfortable and fast use on the M8. The low magnification of the M8's viewfinder reduces focus accuracy. You can use a x1,25 magnifier, but it affects the luminosity of the viewfinder, and the wideangles' framelines are more difficult to see. A built-in moving magnifier would be great! c6gowin Posted October 3, 2007 Share #24 Posted October 3, 2007 Thanks Roger. The light string was on a cruise ship and it was blowing around a lot in the Pacific trade winds. It took me two tries to catch it in the right position, even at 1/8000 th of a second shutter speed.
SnapperJ Posted October 3, 2007 Author Share #25 Posted October 3, 2007 Thanks Roger. The light string was on a cruise ship and it was blowing around a lot in the Pacific trade winds. It took me two tries to catch it in the right position, even at 1/8000 th of a second shutter speed. Your picture illustrates perfectly the sharpness and shallow depth of field of the 90mm lens. grillo Posted October 3, 2007 Share #26 Posted October 3, 2007 ... and the picture and it's crop show very well how depth of field depends on enlargement and viewing distance (the full sized picture has more DOF!)
Max Alfy Posted October 5, 2007 Share #27 Posted October 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I never hesitate to shoot the 90 ASP fully open: F2 + 2s self-timer makes a worthwhile IS. The following is not exactly at 20 ft… The Areva and Cœur Defense towers are at 5 km (3 mi). 1: The usual 100% crop (after curves and a mild sharpening) 2: The full story, non-retouched 3: Different crop and different time (160 ISO, f2, 1/500, hand-held, ugly TV aerial erased). Max Alfy Posted October 5, 2007 Share #28 Posted October 5, 2007 A line dropped from the thread. 1: The usual 100% crop (after curves and a mild sharpening) 2: The full story, non-retouched This was at 160 ISO, f2, 1/8000, hand-held Max
psquared Posted October 5, 2007 Share #29 Posted October 5, 2007 Here's one with the 90AA from about that distance that shows a nice out-of-focus background.
SnapperJ Posted October 5, 2007 Author Share #30 Posted October 5, 2007 I have been testing my 75mm Lux thinking that I had a problem with the lens or that my range finder needed alignment. As it turns out the only problem is me! The lens is sharp and the range finder is spot on, which is a relief. I think what happened with that particular image was due to me focusing and then recomposing the image without taking this into account that the focus had shifted. I suppose at f1.4 this would be enough to produce unsharp pictures. Anyway the photo below was taken in low light at f1.4 and is quite sharp, all be it not as sharp as the 90mm ASP. The second photo is a small crop from the first image. Thank you all for your helpful advice and taking the trouble to post example photos.
