Rono1 Posted September 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm considering an MP a la carte. I'm just unsure as to whether to get the traditional MP rewind button or get it with the M7 rewind lever. I realize i's ultimately a matter of personal choice; but might there be any underliying benefits between one and the other? Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Hello Romano, Having used many M3's, M4's and M5's, now owning an M6 and M7, I can definitely recommend the rewind crank. Unless you prefer the 'classical' look of the MP, the rewind crank is definitely easier to use. The other option is to get an M8; you will not be facing such a dilemma.... Craftsman Posted September 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 30, 2007 Rewind lever not button and rewind knob. I dont like the rewind crank like on the M6. I much prefer the rewind knob like on my MP.
jgwill1 Posted September 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 30, 2007 I'm thinking of replacing a broken M6 classic with an MP. I must say i'm not overly bothered about the aesthetics of the camera but am seduced by the re-engineering of the internal mechanisms. Can anyone with a broad experience of both cameras shed some light on this for me? Does for example the improved shutter mechanism relate to less vibration and consequently enable slower shutter speeds or does it only impact on increased reliability? Does the top body casting really mean the rangefinder is less lightly to go out of alignment or is this just sales talk? Lastly, how much better is the new rangefinder patch? Of course, i would always have the option of getting the M6 viewfinder upgraded. Bearing in mind i can get a used M6 for a third of the price, i'm wondering whether an MP is really worth the extra money; money which i could then spend on an M8! thomasw_ Posted September 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 30, 2007 only you can decide whether it is worth it. i think it is, but that's my assessment. the internal brass gears and top plate give the mp a certain weight and smoothness in operation that slightly surpasses even my lighter m3. j. white Posted September 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2007 Lastly, how much better is the new rangefinder patch? I recently replaced my stolen M6 TTL with one that had been upgraded to the MP finder, and there is a noticeable improvement in the rangefinder patch contrast. By way of comparison, I'd say the difference is more along the lines of "Hey, this is nice." than "Boy, how did I ever get along with that old finder?!?" As part of my grieving process, I also got a 90mm lens. The one odd thing I've found is that the right side frameline is not as contrasty as I would like - it frequently disappears altogether when shooting, especially in low light. I've since had the camera CLA'ed which incuded alignment of the rangefinder, but the behavior is the same post-alignment. Unfortunately I'd never shot a 90 before so I can't comment on whether this is typical of all finders or just mine. Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I'd be curious to hear from others about this. -J.
