Advertisement Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Hi sparkie, Take a look here Shoot, my CV 15 rattles!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Hookeye Posted September 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 29, 2007 No, my CV15 certainly does not rattle. But then I've never shaken it either. Perhaps there is a trapped photon or something in between the lens elements ? Can you see any loose objects when you open it wide and inspect it carefully against a white paper background? carstenw Posted September 29, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 29, 2007 I noticed that my Leica IR filters rattle. Could it be the glass in the filter?
dougdarter Posted September 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 29, 2007 I've just given mine a shake, and it does rattle!! Not badly, or loudly, but there is definitely something that is a bit loose. It's a fairly new copy too. I'm not about to worry though, it's a fantastic little lens that works perfectly.
sparkie Posted September 29, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted September 29, 2007 OK I think I have fixed it!! Hans, just so know I'm not a nutball,.. I don't go round shaking my lenses one by one before I go to bed each night . I was just taking it off to fit my 40/2.0 lens on and the rattle began. Curious I give it a gentle shake and to my horror it was pretty bad. Sounded like a loose element. But then though that was most unlikely. Reaching for the bottle [chardonnay] I feared my little gem was falling apart! Carsten, I dont even have a IR filter on my 15. I havent got round to all that yet. Last I read the solution was some kind of glue on option? But you're right to point out a loose filter glass. I have a couple of old leitz e39 chrome UVa filters that are loose and clack when shaken SO, I guessed it might be the outer glass on the lens. I grabbed the nearest Leica lens cleaner and pushed down and twisted to the right and whah-laa, the problem was fixed! Some how this outer glass element had worked its way loose. I just gave it a turn and it tightened up. I shake it now and it doesnt rattle. Just a very little tinkle, like a grain of sand in there. Perhaps thats the sound you hear Doug I know this lens was cheap. But I didn't quite expect the front glass to work its way loose like this
doubice Posted September 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 29, 2007 There is a slotted retaining ring which holds the front element in place. That is what most probably worked itself loose on Sparkie's lens. Vibration at a certain speed or pitch has been known to loosen screws and such - frequent plane travel sometimes contributes to this vibration and loosening of screws. The slight tinkle that can be heard from the inside of the Heliar is the aperture mechanism. These are never tightened down, otherwise one would not be able to adjust the f-stop..... The pitch of the 'tinkle' will change with the lens at full aperture and fully closed down - this is because the blades are at a different postion at f:4.5 and f:22 and a different amount of pressure is applied to them. Jan, with a tinkling Heliar.....
mike prevette Posted September 30, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Funny thing, I just noticed today that the shade was loose on mine. Mine is a VERY old copy, one of the first 500 off the line. I had never had a problem till today. A simple turn of the retaining ring fixed it. _mike
