Pieter12 Posted November 7, 2022 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just acquired one of these, in excellent cosmetic conditions. A few test shots look good, but all the movements are quite stiff--tilt, shift, focus and aperture. I don't know if that is because it has been unused for a while and whether it will loosen up a bit with use or it requires service. Any experience with this lens? The aperture preset seems a bit counter-intuitive, too. I find I need to set the aperture ring to the smallest aperture, and then meter by turning the outer ring to get the correct aperture and transfer that number to the inner aperture ring. Of course, if I'm using strobes I would just set the aperture according to my flashmeter.
Advertisement Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 Hi Pieter12, Take a look here TS-APO-Elmar-S 120mm f/5.6 ASPH movements stiff. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
John McMaster Posted November 8, 2022 Share #2 Posted November 8, 2022 The aperture ring is a pre-set type. Say you are shooting at f11, set the ring to that. Then you can focus wide open then stop down without looking at the lens. It is a Schneider lens, so that is why it is quite different to other S lenses.... john
Pieter12 Posted November 8, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted November 8, 2022 I realize that. It just seems odd that the meter can only read it in stopped-down mode.
John McMaster Posted November 9, 2022 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2022 Why? There is no data connection to the camera... john
Pieter12 Posted November 9, 2022 Author Share #5 Posted November 9, 2022 I just expected that a modern lens would at least have had the aperture data connected. Still taken aback by how stiff all the controls are.
John McMaster Posted November 10, 2022 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2022 I wouldn't call the controls on mine as stiff, so maybe will loosen up with some use or needs a CLA... john
