Leica M6 classic with SF24D, how does it work?

Hey guys, I need your help! 

Im completely new to flash-photography, and got some (really stupid) questions about how it works.

From what I've figured out, I'll make this as an example. 

I will load up my M6 Classic with a roll of portra 400

Set the syncspeed on the camera (1/50)

Set the correct ISO on the flash

Set the correct Aperture on the Flash.

My question is, how do i know the correct aperture for the scene?

Do I meter with the built in light meter in the camera? I guess no? 

Question two: I would like to be able to use this flash handheld as well, what cable would be suitable to use for this?

First, welcome to the forum. If you want to use the flash as a fill light, meter the scene then adjust the EV down a bit. To use the flash off camera, you’ll need a Nikon SC-28 cord or similar. Since the M6 Classic doesn’t support TTL, you just need to be able to trigger the flash. If I remember correctly, there is a conformation light on the back of the flash indicating enough light has reached the subject. Be prepared to do some experimenting.

Alright, thanks a lot, I've heard about the SC-28, so I guess ill dig for one of those. 
The flash itself I think I've figured out now, first roll of film is complete, time will tell!

The SF4D also has a test button.  So if you are unsure if you picked the correct aperture, just push that button.  If you get the exposure ok confirmation light on the flash, you are good to go.  You don't even need a camera to test it!
