thomasw_ Posted September 22, 2007 Share #24 Posted September 22, 2007 i have recovered many different Ms with cameraleather's levant calfskin; my preference was for the classic look of the black. I have recovered a barnack IIIc, a M5, a M2 and M3 as well as a M6. It does wonders for the appearance of your M. And it didn't take me more than 1.5 h to get a M really clean and stripped. I used two tools I considered essential; one, a set of small screwdrivers for scraping and manually lifting the old vulkanit; the second, some chemical paint remover. Being careful to use a tiny paint brush, and avoid any metal or painted screws, I would paint tiny amounts of the paint/stain remover on the vulkanit; it would start to blister and lift off rather easily after a while. I just e-mailed them about it, and shall be sending my M8 in soon. I find its current covering too slippery, and the optional grip not very satisfactory. I haven't been to LA since 1998, stayed at the Biltmore, you can really feel connected to hundreds of movies in the lobby and whisky bar. Love the city, infact the entire West Coast is just splendid. And you don't even need to remove the lever, just thread the skin over them. Gets more interesting. BTW what do you guys think about camera value after you reskinn it? In my M2's case for instance... I bought a couple of sad looking M2s and m3s and spent the money on the cameraleather coverings; i resold them for between 120 - 180 more than I bought them. It depends on whether the buyer loves the skin or not. Also do you find the recovering process a joy or a hassle?...Factor in your time, only you can decide what that is worth. I think you will always find a buyer who covets your bluish m2, so don't worry about it. But as a general principle recovering is best done because you, the current owner, like what you are doing. Just good to know, and fun to know I might just have added a hint of value to it. Thomas, I enjoyed the job of re-skinning it very much. I had a lot of fun and felt really good that I pulled it off rather nicely on my first try. I think I could make it faster the second time, maybe down to a couple of hours instead of three... Lately I fixed myself the Luigi-case and thus don't see the (some say "shabby", I think "bearable" nails it) mill-coating anymore. And wearing-comfort also increases. My first M8 (one of the original 1500--purchased in early Nov. 2006) had a corner of the leatherette (as Leica calls it) coming lose. The camera died of the sds syndrome and was replaced at Easter time. The replacement M8 is now at NJ for service. I got the letter on the repair last week and one of the items being performed is "replace housing leatherette". I think they are doing that because it had a defective monitor and they are putting in a new monitor. They must have to peel off the leatherette to do so.
