OK, so here she is! It took me 3hours to peel off the old vulcanite, clean her up real good, and apply the new "dress" from cameraleather.com.

It looks even better than I hoped for! Applying was fairly easy, time is your friend!!! Peeling off the old vulcanite was a pain. Cleaning even more pain. The pieces are high quality and cut in what feels like hundreds of a millimeter accuracy! Amazing.

Beautiful for an old M. But with regards to digital: I cannot imagine how to rip the plastic off of the M8? Lately I fixed myself the Luigi-case and thus don't see the (some say "shabby", I think "bearable" nails it) mill-coating anymore. And wearing-comfort also increases.

I wouldn't change the M8's skin either. I felt like I was hursting the M2 really bad today, an inner voice kept saying, "don't do it, don't do it!"

Here is the old one, it's not so bad from the front, but the back was worse. And the Vulcanite smelled like an old garbage can!

Can you give details on how to remove and clean? Also details on installing the new material. Thanks, Looks Great to me.

I used a hobby knife, you know, the scalpell looking knife. I carefully broke of small pieces from the vulcanite. In some places I could easily remove finger nail size pieces, but usually I got only small fragments to come off at a time. The vulcanite was very "dry"...

When all the vulcanite was removed, there was a lot of old glue left here and there, so I scrubbed this off with the same hobbyknife and small screwdrivers where the knife was too big. (Small electronic repairmens screwdriver set)

When I was satisfied, I blew the body off with my lens blower to check if all fragments of old glue and vulcanite was gone, I was specially careful around edges. After this I wiped the body off with a cloth and again made sure not to have left anything behing, anywhere.

I washed my hands, had a lot of dirt, glue and vulcanite on them (all over the kitchen for that matter :D )

First I sat for awile looking at my M2, and the pieces recieved from cameraleather.com.

I made up my mind, where to start and how to do it. On both sides I started applying the selfadhesive leather in the right upper corner of the left side of the camera, and vice versa on the other side.

I cut out the parts from the protective film as close to the part as I dared, in order not to have a lot of excessive protective film around the parts.

Applying the parts was not difficult, but I have small hands, and good motoric skills, because I've been building model kits since childhood

The cleaning and removal of the old vulcanite took maybe 2,5h and the applying of the new skin only took around 30min.

Morgan is a super-friendly gentleman who even encouraged me to save money on the shipping!

Total cost for this set was ONLY 26USD (18,50euro) incl shipping to Finland. I ordered the parts on monday, and they arrived today in an envelope.

Here's a picture of the M2 when I considered it clean enough.

Great job - the camera is a real standout! Last year I recovered an old Ricoh RF (Morgan didn't have precut parts, so we chatted about how to best do the job) with an embossed leather Crocodile pattern...and it quickly became a local showpiece. I'm sure yours will attract a fair amount of attention as well.

Nice, do you have a picture of it?

I did think of something more exclusive and rare at first, maybe lizard skin or something, but I ended up with this one, partly cause it was a very small investment incase I mess up!

CameraLeather is doing M8s. They are complicated because there are electronics under the skin. I have been thinking of doing the same for my chrome M8. So much nicer looking. Here my M3 in its new threads.

Superb job, Andreas! I have recovered my M2 about 2 years ago, with a Vulcanite look-alike from Aki Asahi, who is located in Japan. Camera looked like new.... The Cameraleather's kits are also of excellent quality and fit.

To add to your detailed instructions - it is absolutely imperative that the body is meticulously cleaned and de-greased before applying the new covering. I have also removed the lens lock button, selftimer, pre-view and rewind levers, to make the application easier.

Best,

Jan

gratulation to your work and real nice to see what was before,

I only wonder the selfrealise knop,

I thought M2 don't have such a feature.

Martin,

All later M2 bodies had a selftimer (Selbstausloeser) and are often referred to as M2S.

Best,

Jan

I did not remove any levers, patience and nerves take you trough it. You tread the cut-out trough the levers carefully with pressure to the upper side so that the self-adhesive back don't get stuck. I tested the adhesive today, and it's true as stated on cameraleathers homepage the glue is agressive. If I wanted to re-arrange the kit, I would have damaged it. Once it glues to the body, it's solid!

Thanks for the kind remarks! It was well worth 3h.
