Willockboy Posted October 6, 2022 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I purchased a used Summilux 35 mm-TL f/1.4 ASPH lens around a year ago and have only just tried to use it for manual focusing. However, it seems that the there is no focusing ring on my lens model, despite attempting turn the large knurled section. Is this because there is a fault with the lens or did Leica not make manual focusing a possibility with all of the 35 mm TL lenses? It seems that the there is no focusing ring on this model. Is this because there is a fault with the lens or did Leica not make manual focusing a possibility with all of the 35 mm TL lenses? With thanks. Did you set focus mode from AF to Manual in the camera menu ? Edited October 6, 2022 by FrozenInTime

Something not right there - it’s focus by wire so there are no “ends” to the focus ring turns. Can you turn on focus peaking? That will make it easier to see as you move through the range though it should be obvious anyway 13 minutes ago, FrozenInTime said: Did you set focus mode from AF to Manual in the camera menu ? That shouldn’t matter. If you’re in AF with a TL lens turning the focus ring overrides it

Yes, I did set the focus mode to Manual but the real problem is that the focus part of the lens barrel doesn't turn and I don't want to force it if it's not meant to turn. Your lens does sound faulty ; mine freely turns. Just checked operation on the TL2 : In AFc and AFs the manual focus input is tracked only while the shutter is half pressed. tommonego@gmail.com Posted October 6, 2022 Share #7 Posted October 6, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hold the shutter down half way and you should be to focus with the lens. Works on both my 23 and 11-23. Also on both lenses the focus ring is free wheeling with no affect on the focus without depressing the shutter half way. If the focus ring is not turning, the lens has a problem.
ruskkyle Posted October 6, 2022 Share #8 Posted October 6, 2022 It sounds like you have the camera set up right and know what you’re doing, but unfortunately that your lens is mechanically faulty. Maybe give it a bit more pressure on the rotation? It could just be stuck.
Willockboy Posted October 6, 2022 Author Share #9 Posted October 6, 2022 Thank you to everyone who has responded, which is really appreciated. I think that the lens must indeed have a manual focus problem, although in AF mode it works perfectly. I have tried half pressing the shutter and, with a stiff slight movement in the barrel, focus peaking is enabled.
