biglouis Posted September 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm generally getting on quite well with scanning the results of my efforts with film and slide. I'm using a M6TTL and various lenses, although mostly my 35lux and my 21 pre-asph elmarit. I can't quite figure out the best scan resolution and output resolution/size parameters. I want to get a scan from a 35mm neg of approximately 3000 pixels and at a resolution which will support A3. The problem is, I really don't understand printed resolutions versus print size. I started s scanning at 4800dpi and outputting to 48bit RGB at 320dpi and ending up with 420Mb files (is that overkill?). I've now changed to a 4-pass scan at 3600dpi with output to DNG at a printed size of A3, with RAW file type as 24 bit RGB and my file size is more like 50Mb. If anyone can throw me a bone here and suggest the optimum for what I want - if I have not already discovered it, then I'd be very grateful. andybarton Posted September 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2007 I scan slides at 4000 dpi, 48 bit RGB and save them as tiff files. They are around 125MB and easily print to 20x30" and beyond.
srabu Posted September 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2007 Hi Louis, I agree with everything Andy mentioned. In case you want to be able to understand the math behind it (it's quite simple, really), please have a look at this website: Scanning Basics 101 - All about digital images Best regards, Stefan.
