svante Posted September 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a Leica R8 body (serial no. 243XXXX) with a 14209 Motor-Winder (not a 14313 Motor-Drive) attached at a recent auction. The camera body is in nice shape while the winder is somewhat worn. The unit appears to have been in regular use so I guess that any “straight-from the-factory” glitches have already been fixed. This afternoon I put fresh batteries and film in the camera and went out testing it with a ROM lens. On several occasions it happened that the camera fired three shots and reset the frame counter to one. I guess that the film loading routine was somehow triggered. Apart from that the camera seemed to function normally. The “three shots – reset counter behaviour” could occur, for instance, when I was removing the camera from my shoulder, not touching the camera body – only holding it by the strap. I am quite sure the camera was in “sleep” mode at that time, but I am not sure if it also happened when the camera was “awake”. I have not found any way of provoking the behaviour wilfully. Has anyone else seen similar behaviour? I will try the obvious and clean all the contacts of the winder and camera back. Do you have any other tips and hints? Leica started the production of the R8 with the numbers 229xxx. It is known, the early bodies sometimes have electronic problems especially when combined with winder/drive. As far as I know, only the late bodies with numbers from 25xxx to 278xxx, where the end of production of R8 model is, are in correct working order. I think you have to post your camera to the Leica customer service to refresh the electronics. As I heard - in the forum - they will repair the problem mostly by simple software reprogramming. I'm working with an R8 body 275xx in combination with drive and winder but didn't meet any problems until now. Good luck and sorry for my simple English. I am aware that early R8:s had problems, and if nothing else helps it will have to go to service, but I am now looking for things that I could try myself before that. joechan Posted September 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 21, 2007 I recently bought a refurbished Nikon F6 that had exactly the same problem. The fault was in the film back switch that signals to the camera electronics that the film back has been closed and so initiates the film loading process. Every time I pressed on the film back, the camera wound on two frames. I was able to fix the fault temporarily by sticking a small piece of foam on the film door to push the switch in further. svante Posted September 21, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Joe, your idea seems logical, and is supported by the following observation: With film in the camera I hold the back door firmly shut. At the same time I open and close the latch. This triggers the loading routine of three shots and a counter reset. (This can be done with a rewound cassette, so the presence of film in the camera is probably sensed by the DX contacts.) I conclude that there is a sensor in the latching mechanism in the main body that can not be seen or manipulated without disassembling the camera. The gold-plated contacts that can bee seen in the back door are probably without importance in this case. (Opening and closing the door without allowing the latch to snap back does not trigger the loading routine.) I will make sure that the back door is completely latched and hope that this will cure the problem, otherwise the camera will have to be serviced. Thanks for your suggestions.
