davidecossu Posted September 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I'm scanning my b/w films with my epson 4990 scanner and its software. I kind of like the result but looks like silverfast (I own SE edition that came with the scanner) is far better and the epson software is rated as "mediocre". I tried several scans with silverfast but it was a disaster, a very awful product with no sharpness at all. I guess it's my fault. I generally scan in 16bit at 4800 dpi, if this can help. Any advice? Thanks, Davide

cocker Posted September 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 19, 2007 Davide, I use Silverfast with my Epson V750. The results I get with it are infinitely better than I got when I tried out the Epson Software. (and also Vuescan) Having said that the Silverfast interface is not the easiest to get to grips with. There are several tutorials on the Silverfast website and the product also has some very good embedded Quicktime videos for each tab and section. just click ion the Quicktime Icon against the various sections. Silverfast is, IMHO, the best Scanning Software i have used and is worth persevering with. Best of luck
davidecossu Posted September 22, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted September 22, 2007 Keith, I had a look at the Silverfast website and helped a little bit, but does't explain anything about scanning in 16bit HDR. With this setting looks like the software chooses for me and I have no control over histogram and the rest. So once the picture opens in photoshop I have a negative version, I click "inverse", it comes out bleached out, then using levels doesn't give a good result and with curves loses some details. Do i do something wrong? Thanks, Davide
