Thank you both. So in order to get a monochrom image I have to shoot jpeg only? Thanks again

Yes, if that is what you want, but you loose the ability to choose how you process the black and white image in post processing. The JPEG image is “baked in”. By that I mean the image has been processed in camera, to Leica’s recipe. It is also a lossy process meaning the some image data is lost once the file has been generated. To some that’s all they need, but for others they like to keep all of the image data.

The raw DNG file allows for better post processing of the files, even if you’re changing them to black and white. The file is also a lossless process, meaning all of the image data is kept. Once you’re happy with the post processing of the DNG image file you can convert it to JPEG, or whatever format you want.

I'm not saying you have to process the DNG file, if you’re happy with the JPEGs  from the camera then that’s fine. But you might want the DNGs one day.

FYI

To add to what was said:

  • JPEG – you get exactly what you see in the Q2 EVF/LCD
  • DNG – RAW color files – simply convert it to black & white in a RAW processor such as Lightroom, Photoshop, or Capture One

Often you'll find that a DNG manually converted to b&w in Lightroom or Capture One is superior to the JPEG since you can manipulate the brightness of each color in the spectrum by hand. For example, here is the b&w panel in Capture One where the blue/cyan sky has been darkened and the yellow/red dirt (due to sunset light color) has been lightened:

I sometimes set the camera to monochrome while shooting raw to help me visualise what a monochrome shot of the scene would look like. I still prefer to make the mono conversion in Lightroom. IIRC you don't actually have to set the output to JPG or JPG+raw - the EVF will still show monochrome when set to raw output only (I don't have the camera to hand to confirm).

If it’s like the M monochrome setting is only available with  JPEGs active.

@LocalHero1953 I’m only going on the Q2 manual here : https://leica-camera.com/sites/default/files/pm-59416-EN_Leica-Q2.pdf

Page 56 in Q2 manual states

MONOCHROME IMAGES
You can choose to save your images in color or monochrome, provided you take the pictures in JPG format.
Two pre-configured monochrome profiles are available:
– Monochrome
– Monochrome HC

@LocalHero1953 It’s only if you want to SAVE monochrome images you need to set JPEGs. The LCD/EVF can go monochrome without JPEGs being selected … EVEN on my M10-R😳😳😳😳

New to me, I’ve been shooting DNG+JPG in order to get monochrome viewfinder. The monochrome images setting is in the JPG settings menu hence my confusion.
