I can't stomach the idea of using an app for long exposure shutter activation. is there an available aftermarket button that goes over the existing anyone has used, that accommodates  shutter release cable? I found raised soft release buttons but none old-school threaded.

Nope, you’ll want to use the in-camera self timer.

Then you've never enjoyed an old school shutter release cable or think it's antiquated.

That's not the point. I've been a professional photographer using 8x10, 5x7, 4x7, medium format, 35mm.... for decades. Of course I've used traditional shutter-release cables.  The point was, and is, you can't use one on the CL - it doesn't have a threaded shutter-release button. If you are a machinist, you can likely fabricate one - but again it's pointless. Simply use the built-in self-timer. Same outcome.

I had my Q on a tripod, trying to get shots of some birds visiting a a small fountain.  The delay in triggering the shutter using the app was long enough to miss more shots that I got, assuming the app was awake.  Using the self timer in that situation would have been even worse.   Was I supposed to trigger the shutter and hope a bird was in frame 2 seconds later?

Anyway, that's when I tried to create the bracket to hold a shutter release cable.  The tricky part was matching the threads on cable release.  That's where the 3D part works better than the aluminum version.  The tapered threads on the cable release can modify the threads in the 3D part for a better fit.  Still flexes more than I like, though.

To the OP: sorry I missed your original question or I'd have pointed you to the page Siriusone59 linked earlier.

Sorry looks way to cumbersome for my tastes.

While searching for a solution some time ago, I ran across his device.  Thought it was a pretty creative idea that beat what Leica offers.😉 Oh wait, no one else has it...other than the phone app method.   Quite ingenious in my opinion.
