Philip Freedman Posted September 17, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sometimes the focus ring of a lens on my M8 won't turn cleanly to infinity. One day it does, then the next time I use it the focus ring gets stuck before it gets to the infinity position. This even happens to my brand new 28/2.8 ASPH as well as a recent 35/2 ASPH and a 35/2 pre asph. I always mount the lenses firmly until they click into place. Help please Philip
Advertisement Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Hi Philip Freedman, Take a look here Lens wont turn to infinity. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
grduprey Posted September 18, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2007 I have the new 28/2.8 Asph and have not seen this at all, neither have I seen it on my other M lenses. They all focus to infinity every time. Are they doing this when off the camera also? Or just when mounted? Gene
Iron Flatline Posted September 18, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 18, 2007 Ya, I had the same thing, so I took it to a dealer. My 35mm Summilux wouldn't go to Infinity, it stopped just prior to it. It's a problem, mine had to be sent in for adjustment.
Iron Flatline Posted September 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 18, 2007 Do some focusing tests - preferably something close up, and something far away. Shoot a flower or something detailed about six feet away, and something like billboard text about 50 feet away. Don't bother with the display on the back, just go to your computer. Check it out at 100 % so there's no reduction or magnification. If BOTH are out-of-focus (or front-focused / back-focused) then you have a BIG problem. If only the far shot is out of focus, then there's a small problem. HOWEVER: the question is can you live with it? If most of your work is portrait, or mid-distance street action, chances are the far end of the spectrum won't matter.
Iron Flatline Posted September 18, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2007 Oh, and shoot each of those subjects at wide open, at f/5.6, and at f/16.

Help please Philip I presume you mean that the lenses focus normally before you mount them on the M8, but once mounted the focus ring sticks. Is that right? Philip Freedman Posted September 18, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Exactly. All the lenses work fine off the camera or on my old M6 but the focus rings get stuck before the infinity mark when they are on the M8. I have now returned the camera to Leica UK to investigate. doubice Posted September 19, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2007 I am sure that someting is blocking the rangefinder arm. Best way to check would be to remove the lens from the camera and manually push the arm in (gently), to see if you get infinity focus. Best, Jan
