Any advice for shooting the UCI Road World Cycling Championships over the next week?

Hi,

I intend heading down to Wollongong from Sydney tomorrow to take some photos of riders at the UCI Road World Championships. Tomorrow's relatively short and flat Time Trial (two laps, total 34.2km) will be a bit of a test run for me with the major race being the much longer and more challenging Men's Road Race next Sunday (266.9km).

I will be using my SL2 and thought the V-E 24-90mm would probably be the best of my lenses to use there as I will be able to stand right by the course in the suburbs, where the rods are two lanes wide, probably near one of many corners. It should be a mostly sunny, partly cloudy day. Other lens options are the V-E 90-280mm and APO-Summicron-SL 50mm.

In the Time Trial tomorrow I'll be aiming at individual riders, mostly in an aero position on the bike. In the Road Race next Sunday there will be some very large groups of riders and some smaller break-aways.

So, I am thinking P Mode, DNG raw files, Single image or Continuous - Low Speed,  AFc for Focus Mode, maybe Tracking for AF Mode, ISO 100-200 (unless it comes over super cloudy), AWB and for AF Profiles, probably Runner (constant movement) but I am not so sure whether to adjust the default values for Depth Sensitivity (+1) and Field Movement (-1)?

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks:)

So I just watched a few Youtube videos on this and although not many were specific to the SL2, it seems I may be best to go with S (at 1000th) or A (wide open) mode; AFc, Medium or High Speed Continuous; Zone tracking (as Face-Body may get confused); Auto-ISO; Centre-Weighted Metering; AWB; and try Runner at 1, 1, 0. I should have enough time to try a few changes of settings and maybe I should consider taking two lenses with the Summicron-SL 50mm perhaps a decent option for the Time Trial (as well as the V-E 24-90)? I will take a spare battery, but don't think I'll cart a tripod around.

have you  been successful with your settings?

Yes, I think so. Here is a decent example. of what I was trying to achieve - Stafan Küng, (SUI) in the Individual Time Trial.
