Amedeo Adapter + Nikon Nikkor S Mount Rear Element Modifications for 3.5cm f1.8 and 2.8cm f3.5

Hi there!

I've tried my best to search before posting but I've only had luck finding a couple examples of people using the Nikkor S Mount 35mm 1.8 Lens on an M Body successfully using the popular Amedeo Adapter by modifying the rear element housing and range finder coupler.

There seems to be a professional service in South Korea (gigantoptik/goliathus) which makes it seems quite easy after he finally got the perfect dimensions for the rear element housing. I got as far as I could using google translate. Additionally there's another person on RangeFinderForum who shared A LOT of info with me and he was also able to do this mod in addition to using a 28mm 3.5 on an M Body. (personal mods and not offered as a service)

My current setup is a Leica M2 with the Amedeo Internal/External Adapter + Nikkor 5cm 1.4; I was in the market for a 35mm 2.5 but would absolutely love to use the 35mm 1.8  if possible. Anyone have experience doing similar modifications or know of shops offering this as a service?

The GigantOptik has manufactured their own parts so that the modification is reversible, this would be ideal if possible.

Thanks in advance! Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated. I'm new to the Leica world but so excited about the versatility thanks to these incredible adapters.

Cheers,

Louie

Welcome!

Conventional wisdom was and probably still is to say don't bother and either settle for a 35mm f2.5 which can be used with an Amedeo adapter or buy LTM versions of the 3.5cm f1.8 or f2.5. If you really want the f1.8 version  I have noticed asking prices for these getting considerably higher in recent months. Here's an expensive example

That said, with patience and careful shopping you might find one for around half that price, or less if in poorer condition.

There is considerable information on Rangefinder Forum about this. This thread is particularly helpful and well worth reading in it's entirety.

Mention is made of (3?) S mount 3.5/1.8 lenses which were modified by Miyazaki San to Leica M mount (posts 102 and 103). I have seen photos of this conversion but am not sure where they are now.

Hi ,

Miyazaki did indeed convert a couple of 2005 reissue 35 W-Nikkor f1.8 to LTM mount.

This conversion kept the focussing direction the Nikon way and the original minimum focussing distance of 0,90m/1m.

Gigantoptik offers the modification with the original 35 W-Nikkor f1.8 lenses not the reissue ones .
Recently I heard that Ruhrlenworx in Essen Germany does convert the original 1950's lens:

About the 28 f3.5 W-Nikkor S mount lens, I fitted a Fotofox adapter to such a lens and used it on a M10-P :

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve read through that thread and the 28mm f3.5 is said to only focus after 6ft. The mods mention there are not reversible which is why the GigantOptik one seems incredible. Not only that, the S mount versions of these lenses are substantially less than the LTM. I can’t imagine the cost of modifying an S mount being so much that buying an LTM is more affordable. JMF, thanks for the feedback and sample photo which looks incredible. I believe things get tricky when trying to use a film body and RF coupler. Maybe I just need to buy an M10 =p
