ashapiro Posted September 17, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm relatively new to LUF and I'm sure there must have been a thread regarding photography magazines, but since I haven't seen one, I'll ask the questions -- What photography magazines do you subscribe to and why? Are there magazines that you would like to subscribe to and why? Arthur
Advertisement Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Hi ashapiro, Take a look here Magazines. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bradreiman Posted September 17, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 17, 2007 "8" magazine is good. I got a copy of a new magazine called "Photo Icon" (i think) in oslo that i found to be really nicely laid out and interesting articles. Not real techie. sean_reid Posted September 17, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 17, 2007 Sometimes they're on-line and not in print. <G> Cheers, Sean
bradreiman Posted September 17, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2007 Sean is right, a good online reading source is reid reviews. a wealth of independent reviews and analyses of cameras, lenses etc derived from real world situations. Also interesting photo related essays....b
M6J Posted September 17, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 17, 2007 Sean's Reid reviews, LFI and LHSA's Viewfinder.
carstenw Posted September 17, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 17, 2007 Reidreviews - in-depth reviews LFI - all about Leica Black&White Photography - all about darkroom and b&w fotoMagazin - general reviews and news Profifoto - news and reviews for pros The last two are German-only. I also read LFI in German, which gets around some of the weirder translation issues Sometimes I buy others too, but those are the ones I buy every month, come hell or high water. guy Posted September 17, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agree with Bradley that 8 is good. Also Aperture, Private and European Photography. All these could be roughly categorised as "contemporary" style photography. I love them. If you're in the UK, Borders bookshops stock a surprisingly wide range of photography titles, including all of the above – they're worth seeking out as a large-ish chain that nevertheless caters to niche markets. Amateur Photographer does pretty good equipment reviews and how-to articles, though the type of photography that gets prominence there is very old-school and, to my taste at least, hackneyed. If AP irritates you, any of the above will be a good antidote. Conversely, of course, if you think the recent winners of the (now-defunct) Schweppes Portrait Prize have just been terrible photographers with no skill in their medium, AP could be right up your street! stunsworth Posted September 17, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 17, 2007 Chasseur d'Image, Reponses Photo. Both French. I used to read them when I lived in Paris and tool out a subscription when I returned to the UK. The mix of hardware reviews and photography is pretty good in both. In fact both cover photography much better than the UK mags that I've read. I agree with the earlier post regarding photographs posted in AP, if I see another landscape with a purple sky, or one taken using a tobacco grad I'll scream. Guest malland Posted September 17, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 17, 2007 Two of the best photography magazines in the world are, unfortunately published only in Japanese, Asahi Camera and Nippon Camera. They are 18x26cm (7x10 inches), have about 360 pages and are printed in very good glossy paper. They have a range of interesting articles — this month's Nippon Camera has a\n in-depth review of the Ricoh GX100 — and publish long-term tests and historical articles as well. Unfortunately, I can undererstand only 10-15% at best, as I only know 200-300 kanji. There is much greater interest in photography in Japan than anywhere else and, cnsequently, many more photographer's monographs are pubkished there as well. In Tokyo a fortnigh ago I bought two new Moriyama books, Hawaii, and Kyoku/Erotica (nothing erotic in it). These are available from Amazon Japan, but the shipping is fairly expensive. I used to see quite a good Taiwanese magazine, Photographers International, that published good photographs, in Borders in the Sates and here in Bangkok as well. Does anyone know whether it's still being published? —Mitch/Bangkok

carstenw Posted September 17, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 17, 2007 I forgot to mention that I also buy Reponses Photo and Chasseur D'Images from time to time. Both are good, but more like fotoMagazin in that they cover everything, consumer to pro, but both have better coverage of photographers. Are there some good general American photography magazines? The only ones I have seen (American Photo and one or two others) are so chock full of ads and the articles are so thin on the ground that I completely gave up. They also have that really annoying feature of splitting articles into several chunks, forcing you to chase it all over the magazine. The only one I know of which I like is Lenswork, which is rather specialised.
shushi Posted September 17, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 17, 2007 LENS WORK is a magazine about the other half I need to complete the M8 theme.

Guest WPalank Posted September 17, 2007 Share #14 Posted September 17, 2007 I second "Lens Work" at LensWork Homepage And of course, Reid Reviews.
pascal_meheut Posted September 17, 2007 Share #15 Posted September 17, 2007 Yes, LensWork is excellent. If you like it, you should have a look at Phot Art: Magazine Phot'Art International Text is both in french and english, portfolio choice is eclectic, much more than LensWork and print quality is hard to believe. As good as a traditional print for some pages.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 17, 2007 Share #17 Posted September 17, 2007 i always liked CameraArts and another one i can't think of the name but most of these can be found in the states at Barnes and Noble. But if your looking for lens and camera reviews than Seans is the best place to read. Welcome to ReidReviews
Pedro Posted September 17, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 17, 2007 For me the best photography magazine is the french Photo... I am surprised that no one suggested this one.
Guest localplayer Posted September 18, 2007 Share #19 Posted September 18, 2007 PDN (photo district news) since it gives you what is going on in the industry (in the US) and what some of the top new emerging and established shooters are working on. I take Sports Illustrated and ESPN only because they run my stuff frequently. other than that I tend to just skim the other mags at the book store
