Hannebambel Posted August 25, 2022 Share #1 Â Posted August 25, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. Just bought my very first Leica/Leicaflex camera to mate it with my R lens, which I've adapted to my digital camera few years back. Being in its native place I think my lens is quite happy again. So, I'm quite excited about my new toy, this also marks my return to film photography. I have observed a mechanical noise, a rattle/rumble, if I'm switching shutter speeds slower than 1/30th. This occurs in both directions. From 1/30th to B it becomes louder the slower the speed setting. Between 1/30 and 1/60 and faster it is silent. Note, this only occurs when the shutter is cocked, this somehow makes sense but because it is quite loud (you can hear it easily from more than an arms' length) I wonder if that is normal or rather unusual and something to worry about. The manual says you can set the shutter speed uncocked as well as cocked. Thanks for helping with your experience. Â

hepcat Posted August 26, 2022 Share #2  Posted August 26, 2022 My experience is that there's no significant noise changing shutter speeds, either up or down.  I have no idea what would cause that noise, but I'd consider getting into a a repairman to see what's going on with it. Hannebambel Posted August 26, 2022 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 26, 2022 Thanks hepcat. Do you eventually set the speed first and cock the shutter afterwards? I talked to the repair service (from which I bought the camera from) and he told me that's normal, there is a special mechanics for 1/30 and slower shutter speeds which can be heard. However I find that the this mechanical spring gear noise (hard to decribe) is quite loud, I would call it significant indeed. And I did search but did not find anything about such noises in the internet which means it seldom happens and hence is not a typical issue, or nobody wonders about it. Or I did not search thoroughly enough.:-) I sent it to that service for another issue he overlooked (which was easy to overlook, so no complaints here) and will ask him to hear "this music" again. Thanks and cheers

Thanks and cheers I cock the shutter and then set the shutter speed on my Kiev 88CMs, and my Canon IVSB but every other camera I own (including the Leicaflex SL and SL2) can be set indescriminately with or without the shutter cocked.  Whatever's going on, hopefully your repair guy will figure it out!
