What flashes can be used on the M8

You do not say how you would wish to use a flash but in general any flash that has a low trigger voltage, generally the newer models, will function perfectly well. However, if you wish to utilise the many functions of the M8 a dedicated flash such as the Leica SF24D or a Metz model such as a 54 MZi with an SCA 3502 adaptor will be required.

Can somebody give me a quick primer on what flashes can be used please?

The Leica SF 24D allows full TTL but is a low power (GN 65feet), non-bounce head flash. I use it for indoor shooting or outside flash fill that is close up. The powerful Metz 54MZ allows full TTL function (I believe) but is very bulky (at least when placed on the diminutive M8). If you are using any older flash (on AUTO mode- it works just fine, I doubt you could tell the difference most of the time between that and TTL) use a Wein SafeSync to make sure an older flash with a high sync voltage does not damage your M8. I also use an older Metz 40MZ-3i I found on ebay- GN150 with a tilt and swivel head but is not too tall. I use the handgrip with it to help stabilize the flash (less bulky than the modern Metz 53MZ) in my hand (it is front heavy) or use a bracket (thereby defeating the prime advantage of the M8- small and compact!). A smallish, high powered (GN 120+) bounce head flash from Leica (reasonably sized in comparison to the M8) has yet to be made.

I have an Sf 24, which meets most of my requirements, and is TTL. I also carry around in my small bag, a Leica CF, which is very compact (CF - Compact Flash), intended for use on the CF compact.

It works in fully auto mode on the M8, and whilst not TTL, the results are great. It's a useful edition if you want to take a small, unobtrusive flash where ever you go.

Search the forum on flash--there was a thread here about a week ago.

I have to say that the best flash on m8 is the Canon 580 V2. Auto-thyristor, excellent bounce, very powerful and flexible. Also helps when you have other Canon bodies around, but honestly mine doesn't leave the M8 when shooting.

In fact, I just did a 14 hour shoot yesterday and will have lots of flash pix. I was very nicely surprised by just how good this combo is!

Hi John

I used thr Leica 24D, but looking through my equiptmrnt cabinet, I found a FUJIFILM STROBE GA.

It has two "A" modes A1 & A2 with ISO scale on the back. Set the ISO, look at the distance and than select an "F" stop.

It also has a complete "M" mode.

This flash has a Tilt Head and is no longer made. But I think if you look on e-bay, you might find one.

I've got what I assume is the predecessor version (580EX but not V2). What settings do you use on it when using it with the M8?

Thanks,

Bob,

If you're just using the 580 you'd need to use it on manual. The 580 V2, surprisingly enough, has an auto-thyristor external sensor, so you can actually set the flash on AUTO (they call it E mode) with a custom function.

Once set, you can use the 580v2 just like any auto flash: set the ISO and aperture and shoot away. It works very well indeed.

I just have just one problem with this setup. I want to run a pocket wizard as well as the flash. Since the m8 has no pc synch output (the worst design element of the camera, IMO), I've been experimenting with a Wein safe synch hot shoe to hot shoe adapter.

But when I use it with this flash it's less than good :)... the metal adapter plate grounds the 580 V2 incorrectly. Even taped up, it misses firing, and the external PC synch appears not to work to connect a pocket wizard.

I'm probably doing something stupid, but if anyone has any ideas I'm open to them. How can I get two good flash connections from the M8?
