Magnifier 1.25x

I finally found a 1.25x magnifier for my M8 after being told by EVERYONE that I had to have one for my 75mm Lux. First, this is my first Leica, second I admit I bought this because I thought it would improve the center spot focusing for close up. I finally figured out it increases the framing and supposedly help focus at longer distances. I tried it tonight in my condo and as far as I can tell it makes if more difficult for me to focus accurately. My view is now somewhat blurred where as without the magnifier I can focus pretty well. Tell me I don't have to go out now and buy a minus diopter to put on top this pricey item.

What is your diopter? It may increase the effect of using the wrong diopter (or none) with the loupe. By the way, the diopter you need may not be the same that you need for glasses, so I would recommend visiting the store and trying a few out.

Mystery solved. An added bonus to my purchase which I do not need. Still fuzzy after cleaning. Then I discovered that there was a -2 diopter screwed into the front of the magnifier. Those things are really thin, I bought it used but Mint so the previous owner must have attached the diopter.

Thanks for your feedback.

Q. What is the optional situatioin for using the magnifier.

Well you got a extra $75+ part with your purchase. Not sure why someone would make that mistake.

Some use the Mag all the time, other only for longer lenses 75mm and up and others use it with 50mm and up if the 50 is a 1.4 or 1 f/stop.

I carry mine but rarely use it. I did have it attached all the time and had no problem using it with ALL lenses I have, 21mm to 135. But found it caught on things when swinging the camera around my body and I was afraid of ripping it off or damaging it.

Shootist,

I guess getting out and actually shooting with it will answer most of my questions and when I need to use it and and when I don't.

I thought I had bought a defective item but as it turns out I think I got a good deal $177.00 and I suspect that the previoius owner put -2 diopter on it and it just wasn't working for him/her vision issues and never used it again as it looks like it is right out of the box. I had one on order for the past 3 months and nobody seems to be getting these from Leica.

Thanks again,

Leonard

Leonard, I leave mine on all the time for lenses from 15 (20mm equiv) to 75 'lux. It makes focusing a great deal easier and I work around losing the edges of the image for wide lenses.

I used to find my 75 'lux hard to focus. The magnifier makes a big difference.

That's a very generous offer!! I'm not in the position of needing one, otherwise I might just snatch your hand off!!

I keep my magnifier on all the time, and together with the Leicagoodies 'Shade', I find that the rangefinder is soooo much easier to use.

I very occasionally take it off if I need to accurately frame below 35mm.

Bill,

Thanks for the advice. I suspect I will need it for my 75 Lux also, which is the main reason I bought it on the recommendation of others who used this lens.

Regards,

Leonard

Leonard, BTW, there is something called a STEER at Leica Goodies

www.leicagoodies.com

that makes working with the 75 'lux so much easier. It's inexpensive (yeah, I know, it's unexpected) and works really well. It adds no weight to the lens.

I would try one on my 90 'cron except that it lives in C--------a with my son and the M6.

The STEER is highly recommended. If you need a prescription, Guy uses one!

Guy, the camera is -0.5 by itself (or do you mean that your other diopter is -1.5?)

No my diopters are -1.5 so for me it totals -2.00 which my reading glasses are 200, so i think it equals that. It at least seems to work pretty good.

Now i use my mags all the time and from 28mm up it works fine for me as in seeing the framelines . For the WATE i either guess or use my Zeiss 25/28 external. 24mm is the hard one with the mag on and for eyeglass users they have a hard time with the 28 frames. So it depends on glasses or not and what lenses you have but this is the general consenus i have seen on this forum with regards to the magnifer and what folks can see comfortable. But they do great and i am nailing everything pretty well. i have my misses but my average on being in focus is very high. i know lucky me

Haven't heard of the Leica goodie shade. I will have to check it out. I do find it very difficult to see the LCD in daylight, I am sure a q. for another thread.

Leonardo

Hi Leonardo,

The 'shade' is not for the LCD. It's a wicked piece of optical wizardry which fit's over the prism that lights the focussing window, and decreases the contrast between the brightlines and the subject. It also decreases the contrast of the rangefinder against bright light. It makes the centre portion of the viewfinder much easier to see, and the whole focsussing operation seems to be easier, and much more accurate.
