Well after trying numerous 50s a zeiss 50 f2 loved the optics hated the focus feel . The nokton sharp but muddy shadows no close focus did not again like the feel of the focusing. Also the nokton is big I shoot canons for sports and when I am there for my own work I want a smaller lens A summicron pull out hood model nice but no 1.4. I finally got a summilux with pull out hood not aspherical. So far so good yes I know the aspherical is sharper but money is a factor and I made a lot of nice images with an older one. Funny think I liked the feel of the 21 and 25 zeiss lenses but did not like the feel of the 50. David

I'm the guy that bought David's VC Nokton 50/1.5 & I have to say that for the money (<$300 for the lens used) it's an absolutely amazing buy. Unless one really used the 50mm focal length on the M8 a lot (I don't, given the crop factor and small viewfinder magnification I much prefer the 28 or 35) it's hard to imagine needing a better lens than this.

It's easily the best fast lens I've ever used in this price range, a conclusion I believe others have echoed before including Sean Reid. It's big, but I find it doesn't block the finder without the hood, even on my film cameras & more importantly it's not heavy, compared to something like the Noctilux or Nokton 35/1.2, it balances quite nicely on the M8 actually. I find it just fine for everyday use. Comparing it to the Summilux lux asph no doubt reveals comparitive flaws, but I think the comparison is not really fair given the absurd differences in price.

When compared to other lenses in this price range and aperture such as the Canon 50/1.4 or Nikon 50/1.4 or even the VC 40/1.4 nokton, the 50/1.5 Nokton is a much better lens in sharpness & bokeh.

Just my 2 cents for those looking for a cheap but fast 50 :)

I agree with everythink said about the 50mm Nokton. It's quite simply, astonishingly good.

I have a 50's Summicron, Summarit, and Elmar, and at all but the widest apertures, it's as sharp as any.

I have the 35 Ultron and 15 SW Heliar, and they are just as good. I'd go so far as saying that the 35 Ultron is my favourite lens - it's just sooooo sharp!!
