I’m getting back to basics now so sorry for that but I have a query on using Aperture priority on the SL2. Normally on any Camera I would expect that when in Aperture priority mode any value you would set on shutter speed would be overridden and the shutter speed determined by the available light. However on the SL2 the shutter speed can be overridden by the Control dial on the top plate of the camera on the righthand side. Is there a reason for this

and what do you set this dial to when in Aperture mode ?

I belive the top dial you speak of is actually controlling the exposure compensation when in A mode?

Have a play and report back my friend, your camera may be set up different to mine 👍

Thanks - I see that now

I think Yellow_78 is correct for the default setup for A, top dial for exposure compensation and back dial for aperture setting. I personally switch those two functions. If you have ISO set to AUTO, then exposure compensation can affect ISO, shutter speed or both. That can awkward at times when the camera chooses an ISO/shutter speed combo that you don’t want. If you have one of the top buttons assigned to ISO, with a button press and select with the back dial you can fix this by choosing the ISO yourself.  In A, if you have a lens with an aperture ring, you can reassign one of the dials for ISO (but not for shutter speed). That can work better because now you  have direct control of A, ISO and EC, allowing only S to float. I wish all the lenses had aperture rings.
