Kent10D Posted September 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I picked up the Leica 1.25x magnifier I had on order last night and am very happy with it so far. However, as other magnifier owners know, it is an expensive little doohickey and I'd hate to lose it. The lanyard and case are nice features, but that little snap-button thing on the case doesn't seem like the most secure way to keep it attached to the camera strap. Has anyone taken measure to ensure it doesn't come undone? Like, I dunno, a drop of Loctite or something? Any ideas?
Advertisement Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Hi Kent10D, Take a look here 1.25x Magnifier Security. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
alex7075 Posted September 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2007 When the case is attached on the camera strap and the magnifier is inside, I let the lanyard come out and return in the case from the same side, turning around the camera strap. If the snap-button detaches, the lanyard keeps the thing from falling. When I use it, I trust the snap button and the magnifier screwed on, with the lanyard between them. bayerische Posted September 12, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 12, 2007 Keep it secured, I lost mine the second day I owned it, luckily enough, I found it 10m from my car! Nothing happened to it.
Shootist Posted September 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2007 I have my strap nearly fully extended and snap the case in-between the folds that come out of the plastic cover, locking piece, of the eyelet ring and the adjusting piece. It just fits and you can't get to the snap of the case without bending one the nylon strap legs out of the way. Others have had the magnifier unscrew from the eyepiece so make sure you have the chain attached. I've never had that problem but I don't use the mag to much. Simple but effective! Definitely a "why-didn't-I-think-of-that" type of thing. Thanks.

I have my strap set up a bit shorter I guess, so it would be relatively easy for the snap to get caught on something and snap open. I could try lengthening it to see how it feels, and that would definitley provide an extra measure of snap-security, as you say. I will certainly keep the lanyard attached at all times (I have already had a soft release unscrew itself and go AWOL somewhere in Kyoto, never to return). Thanks. I have also taken the rubber grip part of the strap off, it just peels back and leaves the nylon stap. So if you do that you can make the section on the left side, eyepiece side, of the camera to be just big enough to lock the case snap in place between the two sections of the strap and still have your prefered shorter strap length without nhaving the rubber section off center. c6gowin Posted September 13, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 13, 2007 When I first got the magnifier I put the little leather case on the camera strap as designed but soon decided I didn't care for that arrangement. I found that I left the magnifier on all the time so I ditched the case and used the lanyard for a while and decided I didn't care for that either and removed the lanyard after going a month or so without the magnifier coming loose. Big mistake - a month or so later I lost the magnifier and had to buy a new one. That was an expensive way to learn to use the lanyard. I still don't use the case - I attach the lanyard to the camera strap eyelet like Guy does. Mark Gowin
gravastar Posted September 13, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2007 ..........................Others have had the magnifier unscrew from the eyepiece so make sure you have the chain attached.I've never had that problem but I don't use the mag to much. Apparently the chain is quite abrasive and people have previously said the chrome on the camera body has been marked where the chain has rubbed. I think the black bodies were the most vulnerable... so some caution may be advised if cosmetics are a concern. Bob.
Albert4321 Posted September 13, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 13, 2007 I just don't take mine off and the lanyard is attached to the strap eyelet. The case sits at home me too. my chrome M8 is in a Luigi case, so I don't worry about rubbing.
bradreiman Posted September 13, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 13, 2007 I've had mine about 10 months and I give my cameras a bit of a beating. The case has never left the strap (my loop is about 4 inches). The clasp on the actual telescope is broken where the chain meets the clasp so I just screw it on tight when I use it and keep it in the case when I don't, no working lanyard....B
Artorius Posted September 13, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 13, 2007 I tried 2 different options. 1- Super glue the snap, wrong, didn't work. 2- Remove the snap, I went to a local sewing shop and replaced the snap with a screw snap(for lack of better words). It is a 2 piece screw assembly the replaces the snap. I bonded the screw with Red Loctite. No way it's going anywhere now.

woodyspedden Posted September 13, 2007 Share #15 Posted September 13, 2007 me too. my chrome M8 is in a Luigi case, so I don't worry about rubbing. My case exactly. I use the Chrome body in the Luigi case for all my longer lens shots and the black one for wide angle. Thus I never use a magnifier on the black body. Works for me but YMMV Woody Spedden
wparsonsgisnet Posted September 13, 2007 Share #16 Posted September 13, 2007 First of, the magnifier is really useful, and stays attached to my M8 irrespective of the lens being used. Focusing is made very easy with this little bit of additional magnification, which turns the rangefinder into a .85, right? My leather strap broke reasonably quickly. I had the really cute little leather pouch attached to my camera strap and periodic strain snapped the strap. I took advice from posters here and now use several parallel lengths of tooth floss to keep the magnifier attached to the camera strap rings. Even that breaks periodically, so the multiple strands are proving useful. This stuff also works well for its intended use.

Use the cinnamon flavor and you also get a nice aroma and color to match the red dot!
Photoskeptic Posted September 13, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 13, 2007 I've used one for two years with no problem. The little lanyard works A-OK.
