M8 should is buy a 35 Lux or better Cron ?

I was fortunate enough to pick one up for a song a few years ago, and although it was great, I found no noticeable difference compared to the current version. It's just nice to have it for it's rarity, I'll agree.

I also owned both. No difference that I could see. Premium price is for rarity only.

Strangely, when doing controlled tests, I can detect a clear focus shift with my Summilux, but never when doing practical shooting. Maybe my focusing is so bad it doesn't matter ... But seriously, it is a great and very useful lens. If I had to travel around the world with the M8 and one lens, this would be it.

Not so strange. I think that's case for most photographers *unless* the specific lens example in questions shows more focus shift than the norm.

Both the 35 Summicron and 35 Summilux aspherical lenses (current versions) show minor focus shift. It hasn't stopped many people from producing excellent work with them.

Careful Batman my brand new Cron does NOT have focus shift, my Lux did. Not sure of the data but not sure i would say all.

I had the Cron and have the Lux, and both focus well, without noticeable focus shift. However, some people have had copies with significant problems, so there are definitely possible differences. I would be very careful when buying one, preferably testing it first, and if that isn't possible, make sure you can return it if you don't like the performance.

Hi Robin,

One can never say all, of course. But both samples of the 35 Lux and 35 Cron I tested (very carefully, using focus bracketing, etc.) showed minor focus shift. (see the 35s review) I think that the variations in reports we hear about lenses come partly from variations among examples and partly from variations in how people test them. That said, it always possible that some samples of the Cron show minor focus shift and some do not.

For anyone testing this, I'll mention that I think focus bracketing is essential. Otherwise, misfocus can't be ruled out.

Cheers,

Sean
