Any alternative to the rubber hood or to the generic filter screw in hood? Is it true that you can modify clip on hoods to use on the 40 cron?

Are you excluding any sort of screw-in hood? You can get Series 5.5 to E39 adapters separately on ebay (the same ones they also sell in packages with generic E39 hoods for your lens) or from DAG. That would let you use the E39 hood of your choice (Heliopan make some nice ones).

I already have the adapters. Problem with the heliopan it vignettes with the 40 if you have the UV filter
