I'm using Vuescan. I manually crop freestyle. I have the most basic settings and save as a CDNG, to edit in my photo software (Capture One).

Film, especially B&W, has quite a large latitude and over exposing is best. Especially for portraits I over expose by 1 stop at least. Other people rate their film, 200 instead of 400 for example, to trick the camera meter.

This is a recent scan from a shot I made in 1990.

Nice shot, and thanks !

I also over-expose and I think I've realised the problem - I'm not used to seeing the scans before any adjustments are done .  For example, when I scan now and start editing I have to reduce exposure by , say -2/3 stop or -1 stop .  I wasn't used to that and it felt odd like I had done something wrong but I am sure the lab that I used to use probably put this adjustment in before sending me my scans.

It's kinda stupid that I didn't realise this earlier because I routinely over-expose so of course the un-touched scans will reflect that .

I think ?

Anyway, I'm getting used to it all and thanks for everyone's help

Quick scan / edit .  Light Room.
This was the one-pass option and jpeg which I am using for proofs
I noticed the multi-pass scan gives much sharper scans though .

Yeah, I'm lowering the exposure and adding contrast etc.

Great, thanks .   I think it really threw me that I had to reduce my exposure before doing anything, but then the penny dropped - I AM over-exposing . Duh :D
