My Digilux 2 came home from NJ today

I sent my D2 to NJ two months ago. As of yesterday they are still waiting for parts (the sensor). Their estimate of 4 to 5 weeks wait is blown out of the water. Their credibility is too.

??????????

Let me understand this - Leica is fixing a camera that is long time out of warranty, was not made by them and replacing a part that was made by a third party. At the same time they are fixing other items that were subject to wear and tear (covering, lettering etc.), also N/C.

And their credibility is blown out of the water? Give your head a shake.

My Digilux 2 has been to New Jersy since June and hopefully Sony will supply replacement sensors soon enough so that we can all start using our cameras again.

Correct me if i am wrong - but i thought leica is required to fix the problem because of a defective chip. It’s the same as all the other companies that had the chips in their cameras - panasonic, canon, sony, etc. They are all fixing the cameras that are out of warranty.

My D2 had scratches on the body but there was no replacement parts that you have stated. And i now have dust on my front element that was not there before. And all this took 3.5 to 4 months in the shop. I got a reply back that the techs inspect the camera before they send it out. Sent a reply back asking if the techs would send a camera out with dust on the lens....i did not get a reply back.

This service problem seems to be stateside. I haven't heard of problems with cameras sent to Solms. The sensor shortage is really a Sony supply problem, because of the high number of their sensors going defunct. When I sent mine back to Solms via Milton Keynes, Leica were very helpful and appologetic, they estimated then (beginning of June) a 4 month delay. My camera was turned around in just over 7 weeks, in pristine condition. However I can empathise with those who are having Leica Service problems in the States and I hope that they are soon sorted for you all soon.

I, too, am somewhat dissatisfied with Leica (NJ)'s service. My camera IS in warranty, I was quoted a 5 to 6 week turnaround which became 4 months. I am patient; I had to go through my entire summer, which included monthly trips abroad for my annual vacation, without a decent camera, but I understood that Leica had to deal with a part supply problem. The 2 times I spoke with them (a feat requiring avoiding the voicemail of the Repair Dept. and connecting directly from the Operator, which I learned after the 3 messages I left went unanswered) I was told that the cameras are repaired in the order received, which is apparently untrue. OK, so I waited a few weeks longer than Jon Ladd, as long as I finally got my camera back.

Well the camera works fine but mine, too, has dust behind the front lens element. It possibly has no effect on picture quality but these are large enough particles and fibers that any fairly clean environment should have been sufficient to prevent from settling. The dust was definitely not present previous to the repair and I am somewhat bewildered as to how it got trapped between elements.

I wouldn't have mentioned this at all (I'm mostly just glad to have my camera back) but for the previous comment regarding dust. My glass fetish has been tamed by having a working camera in hand. However, I will not send any repairs to NJ again.

I wish you guys with dust on the lens would give that feedback to the New Jersey repair shop. Send an e-mail at least. It will get read. I've still got mine in there for repair and if they start to take precautions, the rest of us will be bettter off. Thanks.

Darn it! These posts would have been really helpful in my decision to send it to NJ last week. I figured that the turnaround would have been closer to 5 weeks, not 4 months! Wow. I may just send them a letter asking them to send me another camera in the meanwhile. They are, after all, in possession of my property which has a high value. The least they can do is send me a loaner. Has anyone tried this?

I just spoke to New Jersey today. Left a message on the Service Department voice jail and had a callback within two hours. The call actually came at 6:30pm NJ time (3:30pm my time), so somebody stayed and returned phone calls after business hours......

Apparently, a new supply of Sony sensors has just arrived and my Digilux 2 should be finished within a week. So, the Panasonic DMC-FZ30 I have been using for casual digital photography will be put to rest.

Luckily, I am in the midst of puting a new M8 thorough its paces, organizing filters and a Milich 15mm Heliar adapter, so I have not missed the D2 that much. If however, the Digilux 2 was my only decent digital camera and I had to wait 4 months (as I patiently have), I would have been mildly p*****d off..........

I hope that I will not end up with any New Jersey dust behind the front element.....

Best,

Jan

Update to my Digilux 2 "dust in lens" problem.

I have been emailing Leica for a couple of days now. It's a very frustrating process. Anyway, i have explained that the lens has dust in the front element that was not there before its trip to Leica. I even sent some photos to show how visible the dust particles are. Anyway, i got a reply saying that they can take the lens apart and clean it but there will be a charge. I can't beleive that they are charging me for something that happend in their shop. They also said that they do not know how much it will cost to do that - so they could not give me an estimate. Sounds like they have never taken a lens apart!?!?!

I thought when you bought a Leica you had something special. :(

Yikes Pappy I apologize for having influenced you in sending your camera to NJ.

Wow some people have waited four months. I am going to wait for 5 weeks to pass before calling them again. I had no problem reaching them before sending my camera off and am really hoping for the best. Certainly hoping to have it by xmas.

O.K., I haven't been posting here for quite a while but today I turned my D2 on to take a couple foliage pictures and got an image in the EVF and LCD that looked like an "acid trip" from the 60s. Image distorted, bent, etc. 'Sorry to ask but is this the sensor problem I've read so much about? With this repair time issue in NJ still with us is Leica still offering the D3 at a reduced price?

I've been shooting a lot lately with an RD-1 but was really bummed out this morning when I turned on the D2 and found a problem. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Without seeing your picture (maybe you could post it here) I would say your sensor has failed.

What are your next steps? Well, send the Leica repair department an e-mail, with a description of the problem, including your camera's serial number. Mention their warranty regarding free sensor replacement, mention that you have a bill of sale and ask if they will repair the camera. They'll get back to you and I'm sure they'll tell you to send it in. Calling their toll free number will give you instructions on mailing in your camera. (e-mail and address are listed a few posts up in this thread).

FYI, I was not given any D3 offer.

Sending it to New Jersey or Solms? I was instructed to send it to NJ (I'm in Toronto). If you're in Europe, you will be instructed to send it to Solms.

June 18 to October 12........ My Digilux saga has finally come to a successful end! I have it back with a new sensor, new covering and without any New Jersey dust behind the front element. No charge.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ30 will be retiring and hopefully the Digilux 2 has a new lease on life. Going out to take pictures tomorrow with an M8 and a Digilux 2 in tow......

A happy Jan

  • 3 weeks later...

Looks like exactly the same that happened to me, some more scratches on the bottom and a little dust under the front element, (I have pictures to prove it.), but what is worst is that my D/2 is back to Solms for the THIRD time in a row.

When it came back first it had a big blob of dust on the new sensor, so it went back to Germany. Just last week it came back again, and this time it had a couple evident streaks on the sensor, possibly left by the cleaning of it, so it's back for the third time. Each round-trip took about 6 weeks, and looks like taking its toll on the camera, and now just hoping this will be the last time.

To say I'm pretty disappointed by the level of this service is just a plain understatement.

So, from my experience, I suggest to anybody getting it back with the new sensor, to check it against a white sheet of paper with the f/stop closed to 11, if something wrong you'll see right on the display as soon as you half-press the shutter.

Has anyone had experience of a Digilux 2 or LC1 dying completely?

Last week my LC1's sensor started to go (I could see vertical stripes in the LCD when I used focus assist), and then the next time I switched on the camera, just a couple of hours later, there was nothing - no image on the LCD or viewfinder, not even any 'on' light. I've even replaced the battery since, and still no sign of life at all.

Should I bother sending it in for sensor replacement? Any advice would be much appreciated.
