I just received the 90 mm and discovered that the hood attaches at a different position compared to the 50 mm. When I reverse the hoods on both lenses, the 50 mm cap sits just above the hood whereas the 90 mm cap sits a bit into the hood.

Why is this design element different when the lenses have identical length and diameter?

Hoppyman, you're correct.  Here are the two lenses. The hoods are identical, except the 90 mm hood has SL 75/90 engraved whereas the 50 mm has SL 50/75/90 engraved. The 90 mm hood sits approximately 2.5 mm above the lens body. The 50 mm hood sits approximately 0.5 mm below the lens body.

Leica's attention to attention to detail continues to astound me.
