Leica M8 warranty + passport in the UK

I've read about this where i can on here but as a newbie on here I thought i'd ask directly. I'm hoping i've not discovered this issue and forum too late but here goes.

I brought a 2nd hand M8 last week which is due to arrive early this week, I saw a lot of photos of the item and it looked in great condition, I also saw the passport form with the terms and how it is transferable to a new owner.

The seller assured me that this and the warranty were transferable, this was part of the reason why i was content to buy 2nd hand, versus paying more to get one brand new.

I know read that there are possible issues with passports and warranties etc, and also that this issue is different in different parts of the world, for example the M8 in the USA has no passport.

Having read that the passport form itself allows you to transfer it, and I'm hopeful now that the warranty is saying similar things is this going to be the case.. upon receipt of the camera i'll be able to fill in the forms, mail them off to leica and receive a transfer of them both.. I know for certain that according to my understanding of the terms and space on the passport form that it is transferable. It strikes me as strange that if leica UK are prepared to allow the passport to be transfered that they wouldn't also allow for the warranty to be transfered as well.

Any help from you guys is really appreciated, I am starting to worry now.. I thought i had researched everything quite thoroughly.

Cheers

I think the best people to answer your question are Leica. Why not give them a ring and ask them - they were very helpful when I called them about Passport transfer on my MP - 01908 256400.

Thanks, and i think i will do.. Could you elaborate on what occured in your case, with your MP.. did you succeed in getting the passport AND warranty transferred, i take it you post off and receive new cards back after processing?

i think the passport transfer is very clearly written, and states transfer is ok, along with space on the form to fill out the transfer details of the new owner. i've not had chance to read the warranty card yet, but hope it is similarly free about allowing this. I'd appreciate it if they imposed a limit on how many transfers they're happy to do, as this is the original owner from the shop who is selling it to me.

I'll phone them tomorrow if i get chance, i just want to try and calm my fears ASAP :)

Thanks, i'll appreciate any more information you can give me.

Hi,

I have had passports / warranties transferred in the past. Just send off the old passport with your details plus the receipt from the dealer where you bought the camera and within a week or so the new one comes back. I sold an M7 on Ebay and was questioned by an American guy who thought I was running some scam ( I have since bought another M7 to go with my M8), so it looks like we are lucky here in the UK. Perhaps we should keep all this quiet.

Regards ... Jim.

PS. This also applies to lenses and when you think about the resale values it makes sense. I now pledge not to sell any of my Leica kit as I only miss it and end up buying more.

James,

As the last poster said just send the documentation with proof of purchase and they will transfer the passport to you for the balance of the period. The bad news for you in case you didn't know is that the passport on the M8 is only for 12 months in total.:(

ok, I spoke to leica today. The deal is...

The passport can be transfered, as we expected. To do this send the passport form off along with the original receipt. You receive the new passport back a week or two later. After transfer the warranty is also transferred. You can fill out the warranty card, but really its the registration with leica that holds the ownership of the warranty.

This is all only for Leica UK -> Leica UK.

Phew!!
