pocholin Posted February 6, 2022 Share #1  Posted February 6, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I love the function, photos DO come with better contrast but it is nearly impossible to use handheld...even when you use leverage pictures have a little blur, just about the only way to use it is with a tripod or fully sitting it on a flat surface. Does anyone else experience the same? What are your thoughts? I took this picture by sitting it on the edge, which can be seen on the right...very little editing post processing.   Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 Hi pocholin, Take a look here How many of you use HDR function on CL?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted February 6, 2022 Share #2 Â Posted February 6, 2022 That's in the nature of HDR. You take several shots, differently exposed. As the CL can not take several shots from the same spot at the same time, it has to do them one after the other. Move the camera or the subject between shots, and you won't be able to superimpose the shots.
pocholin Posted February 6, 2022 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 6, 2022 I understand the concept and what the camera is doing...it is already combining the three shots why can't it align them? They are not that off from each other. This argument has been used before...if cellphones can successfully do things, in this case use HDR and automatically aligning those pictures (with some limitations for low light) why can't Leicas do the same? Too late for the current generation, but it sure would be nice. Â
pop Posted February 6, 2022 Share #4 Â Posted February 6, 2022 I rather think a recent phone has much more computing power than a camera. Also, the processors in a camera are much more specialised and therefore can not be programmed to do as many things efficiently as a phone. Would be a waste of computing power in a camera. Rosebud55 Posted February 8, 2022 Share #5 Â Posted February 8, 2022 I have never been keen on HDR but may give it a try soon. I didn't know it was possible with the CL. Always learning new things!
jev Posted February 8, 2022 Share #6  Posted February 8, 2022 I would not say it's HDR, but you can take photos with different exposure values and then combine those, sometimes it works very well Sunrise at Zabriskie Point, Death Valley Leica CL with Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH FLE Welcome, dear visitor! jev Posted March 9, 2022 Share #8  Posted March 9, 2022 this is called exposure bracketing on Leica CL or other cameras except cell phones and some strange cameras that do it automatically, now when you combine it in Photoshop or Lightroom that's the process of merging those photos into HDR image

Yes, I've done that with the exposure bracketing but then I end up with triple the amount of pictures and have to do manual alignment or manual selection of pictures to have Photoshop do the blending and alignment for me. Either way, it is a longer process than having the camera doing it for me...it would just be nice if it could work the alignment automatically (as long as it is little)...but it doesn't. I will just have to make sure to use a tripod or solid surface when I decide to use it.
JayBird Posted March 13, 2022 Share #10 Â Posted March 13, 2022 It is not something that I have tried. I typically shoot hand held. Only in specific low light conditions will I use a tripod. As others have said, HDR essentially requires a tripod or steady surface for a good composition.
Rosebud55 Posted March 14, 2022 Share #11  Posted March 14, 2022 I tried the HDR setting in the camera today . All photos are slightly off when enlarged in Lightroom, apart from that it sort of looks ok and is fun to try. I think I need to use a tripod next time. Welcome, dear visitor! Though smartphones are catching up with computational photography.
