C1 help

Hi everyone,

The M8 ships with C1, but the documentation is far less that is available with ACR. I've searched the web to see if I can find any books dealing with C1, but no luck so far.

Does anyone know of a source for detailed info on the use of C1? Phase One's Knowledge base is more along the lines of pointing out where controls are, rather than their detailed use.

Thanks, steve

Hi Steve,

Just to get started, did you go through the "Getting Started" flash based tutorial in the Help menu? Next, have you tried the Help function?

Capture One can have a steep learning curve for new users, but after the first nitty-gritty, it is not that hard for the most of us.

Please let us know what questions you have. Many good guys here.

Hope this helps.

Hi Paul and thank you,

I've been playing with it a bit, but suspect my use of the color balance and exposure tools is weak. With ACR, the means of making these adjustments is well described in the literature, but in C1 I find more pointers to the tools than instructions on the finer points of use. An example would be using the exposure range tools in ACR (alt/slider for white and black); I suspect the eyedropper tools in C1 will lead to something similar, but the descriptions are a little less than I need to see the details of how to use them optimally.

I heard from Phase One this morning and they tell me they aren't aware of any real publications from 3rd parties, so I'll need to play with things a bit more.

Thanks and I'll look at the files again over the weekend,

Thanks, steve

Hi Steven, I encourage you to persevere with C1. It is an excellent software solution. I presume you are using the LE version. Make sure you have updated it to the most recent Ver. 3.7.7. As a corollary, sometime down the track, download the Ver.4 Beta 1.0 ver. that will ultimately supercede Ver.3, in November.

You will find that the only real way to learn it is to use it and practice, practice, prac..... etc. Same as the M8 actually!:D

Keep asking questions and you will master it. Well worth the trouble. Shortly, you should download Jamie Robert's M8 profiles for C1. They make a huge difference once you start being critical. Learning never ens, fortunately.

I second that on the excellence of the C1 performance for M8--I defected after years of using Photoshop/ACR for Nikon Raw; if you run into difficulties (it's not entirely intuitive) the knowledgeable folk here will surely advise. I saw the JR profiles mentioned elsewhere--do you have a link?--with thanks,

Thanks to everyone.

I've been using the profiles and had no problems installing them. They've been very useful, as until recently I didn't have IR filters.

I took the M8 workshop, but the level of experience of the group was so diverse that the instructor had to spend the entire time with one individual and we had no chance to cover the details of C1 ( which was why I went!).

I'll keep my eyes out and post if I find an independent write up. The help files and knowledge base don't really answer my questions. I still don't know how best to use those shadow/highlight eyedroppers...

Stubborness is one of my traits, though, and I will definitely stick with it with ACR as backup!

steve
