tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 22, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use Windows and have for years. After the last two Windows upgrades, image access forviewing and transfer seemsto slowed down conserably. I use my SD card slot in the computer and to get to the files on the card Windows SLOWLY goes through the card before I can see what images I have, I can use details but thisdoesn't let me view the image. This used to be a quick process, but no longer. If I want to transfer the files to the computer, again this is slowerthan in the past. I am wondering if I am filling the hard drive, any other ideas or has any one else noticed this? Again this is direct viewing/tranfer from a card not a camera, WiFi or FOTOS. I am using a CL and always format the card in the camera.

wda Posted January 22, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2022 Check your disk drive to see if you have in excess of 10% free. Defrag your hard drives. Try copying the files directly to a desktop folder and then try importing from there.
tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 23, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted January 23, 2022 Thanks for the suggestions, I took off my 2019 photos to a backup drive, drive now has 1/3 opened. Optimized (what MS says to do for defrag) the hard drive. Working much better. May have to look into a new computer, this one is 5 years old and has just a 500 GB SS drive. Or get a local expert to upgrade selected components. The small business which built my computer about ten years ago, radically upgraded mine last year, including transferring files, thus allowing me to continue using old legacy software. I was very pleased with its enhanced performance.
tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 23, 2022 Author Share #5 Posted January 23, 2022 I am working off a lap top with an external 24inch monitor. I have thought a desktop mightnot be a bad thing, much more upgradable. But I have put some milage on the 2.5lb laptop.
tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 26, 2022 Author Share #6 Posted January 26, 2022 OK, still taking a long time to open the memory cards to images, in Windows. I cleared space on the hard drive, optimized (defragged?) the hard drive, this worked on the hard drive. The problem is still happening on the memory cards, all are 3 or so years old, I rotate 4, 32 and 64 GB. Windows searches the whole card and doesn't get to the images until the end of the search. I did deep format one, no improvement.
wda Posted January 26, 2022 Share #7 Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) It seems that you continue to store down-loaded files on your memory cards. If so, why? Do you use a separate card reader, to match the USB status of your computer data ports? I upgraded my ports, to good effect. Buy a new memory card. Choose a good proven brand, but one with higher data transfer speeds than you currently use. Research and choose one to meet your needs. My cards are mostly quite old and I always reformat them, in camera, after I have backed them up on an external drive. tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 26, 2022 Author Share #8 Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) I only have my latest photos on my memory cards, it may be from days I only shoot a couple of photos, the card that annoyed me today was photos from this week, about 15 on the card. The card then gets uploaded to the computer, and backed up the next morning. As I said I have 4 cards I use, all SanDisk, from B&H, the cards are formated when they go back into the camera, so it is rare I have photos over a week old on a card, but it does happen if I am not photographing a lot. I am using the SD reader on my laptop. I may try cleaning the card reader. This just started happening a couple of months ago, everything was working as expected, then all of a sudden reading new imagesof the memory cards became a chore, currently Iam trying to see today's photos and the computer has been reading the card since I started this post. 90 mb/sec 64GB Sandisk card Edited January 26, 2022 by tommonego@gmail.com
wda Posted January 26, 2022 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2022 If it is a separate card reader, and you suspect its integrity, buy another one. They are not expensive. Impedance at contact point is difficult to remedy, but might be worth trying.
tommonego@gmail.com Posted January 27, 2022 Author Share #10 Posted January 27, 2022 Well, took one of my micro qtips and went over the ports that were giving me trouble, wow they were dirty. Put in a card and it was read immediately, hopefully a solution.
