Great pictures, good experience with the 18mp mode. I think it shows a lot about "resolution" of cameras. When we say that the M11 has a 60mp sensor, we have to consider, that it has a bayer pattern. The colors have to be interpolated to the 60mp from the color pattern on the sensor. This delivers a color picture with 60mp, but with less resulution than if there were 60 million pixels which each could record rgb values. That is the reason the Monochrom produces about twice the effective resolution than its colored equivalent color camera.

While I have no idea, how exactly the 18mp pictures are generated, it is easy to see that they could have a much better resolution than the image of a camera with just an 18mp sensor would have taken. On top of that, due to the downsampling, noise goes down and the dynamic range increases vs. the 60mp picture (a native 18mp camera might have also lower noise and larger DR though).

As a consequence, in many situations, the 18mp mode probably delivers great files with not so much resolution lost as the numbers might suggest, but much smaller and faster in processing. On the other side, the nice thing is, one can switch the M11 always back to full resolution to capture the tinyest detail.

Thanks, the difference is jaw dropping!

Going back to your first shot I would have guessed that you used evaluative metering. I remember from the M9 days how the meter was so easily fooled by point light sources leading to a lot of "dramatic lighting" shots - we've come a long way.

I'm glad you found it interesting. Obviously, there was some work on the back end, but equally the data one can drag up from the deep has been very impressive, AFAIC. (Even at 18Mpx!) Anyone that thinks the files are flat needs to sit down, tug on a slider or two and see just how malleable the contents are. Possibly not a camera for folks that believe things end once the photos been imported, but I'd predict that those who enjoy shaping the result to their will are going to be extremely happy with the M11.

Totally agree and why I felt it that what I was seeing here might be of interest to others.  I probably wont shoot at 18Mpx normally, but I'm thinking the next outing will be at 38Mpx, which for the sizes I print to, is really the sweet spot, yet still affords some cropping capability. And indeed, the speed of dealing with the smaller files is a very nice bonus.

It might even assuage some who find digital too digital...
