Q2 and Lightroom enhance feature?

Hi Guys.

I love my Q2. I have no problem using it cropped to 75mm. From what I have read most users (reviewers) would not use it at 75mm because it is only 7mp. Now Lightroom has a new enhance mode which bumps up the resolution to twice the size. I tried it out and of course on screen the image is a lot larger of the enhanced photo. I could not get my head around posting 2 usefull examples that would make this clear in this thread (72dpi is hardly sufficient), but what do you guys think? Does this Lightroom feature make the Q2 even more great then it allready was?

Hi. I have used this feature before in my work as a printer. I think it is certainly better than nothing, and a good tool to try when you need to increase the file size for printing. When you send a print to a printer, if it is larger than the native size, it is going to be interpolated by either the software or the printer, depending on the settings. The super resolution and enhance details functions provide a more sophisticated and computationally challenging method of interpolation. Long story short, they do a better job of increasing the file size than the printer would or Lightroom/Photoshop would under their normal algorithms. If you are not planning on printing larger than the native file size, then there really are not any reasons to use them (I guess enhance details is worth a shot if you have moire).

All that said, these tools cannot increase detail not already present in the file. What they can do is make recorded detail look better or sharper. If your lens is already sharp and your sensor has sharp details, like in the Q2, it has a lot of potential. But for things like web use or small prints, it is not going to change much, if anything.

I don't use Lightroom, but as I understand it, the Enhance feature is essentially an upsizing process of the sort that has been available in a number of different programs for years. And yes, it does not add actual detail.

I have tried it on several cameras and while I was impressed with how much details it can “draw” (enhance actually tries to) but never was totally pleased with results - when adding some resolution with reasonable “details”, it also adds some artifacts and noise that makes me zoom-out. That’s understandable because it has to deal not only with 100% scaled image (and I suppose everyone is testing it with 1:1 scale) but also with 100% scaled image that already has debayer imperfections 

Also, enhance works best with sharp images made on low iso and with sharp Lens (I tried some high iso with soft lenses and results were poor as predicted) that already look very good

My thoughts are - with technically unperfect image there is not much sense, with perfect image you can get 1.3-1.5x resolution but with 45mp sensor (I don’t have Q2 but tried enhance with z7) it’s more a question of scene if you will notice the difference because it’s not much actually and will provide only small additional print size. I don’t use it anymore but if you really want to crop 28 to 75 then definitely you should try all available tricks
