I have ordered M8 and WATE. Having said this I have very limited experience with range-finders. Does somebody know any activity in Toronto area, courses, gatherings whatever where I can pick up some knowledge about M8, Leica lenses.

Thank you in advance.

the staff are nice so i'm sure they wont mind you spending time with the camera....unfortunately they do not carry many M lenses in stock....

Hi Alec

I live in Toronto and also would be interested in locating a group of M8 users. I don't think there are very many of us though. Maybe we should start one and see how it goes?

I rely a lot on Michael Reichman's Luminous Landscape for information -- I believe he is still quite enthusiastic about the M8. He is quite approachable at his seminars/workshops and I have always found him patient with questions.

Send a private message if you would like to 'meet-up' or start a group.

Alex, it seems that the usual first port of call for photographic gear, Henrys is useless here as they had a falling out with Leica a few years ago so don't stock their products.

I bought my M8 off PhotoCreative in Mississauga and the owner, whose name escapes me, is a pro photographer who is both knowledgeable and excited by photography.

Beyond that, there barely appear ot be photography user groups around Toronto, let alone Leica specific groups. Quite amazing considering hte number of photographers there must be judging by the activity of Torontonians on the Fred Miranda Buy and Sell forum as well as a few others.

I might be into meeting up if we can get enough interest, I'd lvoe some more knowledge, I still can't find the holes for the battery and memory card to go in :)

Gareth,

Name of the owner is Jeff. In fact I called him to order M8 and WATE, however ended up buying in Vistek for the simple reason that WATE was available there. Jeff told me that it would take up to 3 months to get it. Looks like he is very knowledgeable and passionate photographer.

Gareth, I know Jeff Chevrier very well, he has been most helpful with Leica information. He can be reached at:

info@photocreative.com

I once attended a get together with the folks from Leica at his store. That was very useful, I was able to handle the M8 before it was available.

I live in Mississauga, and would be happy to meet up with a group. Name a day and place.

We could be the Toronto Chapter of the Closet Leica Likers. :) it seems a few are coming out as it were...............

Count me in, too...

I got my (first and) second M8 at Merkle Camera on Vic. Park and 401. My "Man" is Patrick Ng, great person and endless source of information. I got the first body last winter for less than 5 weeks when you can only "dream in Vistek". Second body I got in August with in 2 weeks...

All together, see Patrick if you want any Leica stuff fast. BTW, this store IS authorized dealer.:D

You can see my M8 galleries on my zenfolio, and my iStock page...

Hi Alex, I have a M8 on order from Eight Elm Photo, and when I placed my order, it was included in an order for 5 or 6 other people as well, so there are many M8's in the city.

Henry's, Vistek, Merkle, Eight Elm, and Harrysproshop (on the web, but also in the city), are all good sources for used gear.

I expect to see my camera in the next week or two.....kinda looking forward to it.

I live in London, ON. and have been using Leica cameras for a number of years and got into the LHSA as well.

Using an M8 since January and really loving the camera and files it produces and prints from the camera.

Michael Reichmann is speaking for a day long seminar, Nov. 17 at U of T in Toronto sponsored by the Toronto Camera Guild. Might be a good day to take in and speak to him at some point for those interested.

As an aside there will be a good number of M8 users I would think at the upcoming Lhsa convention in Rochester NY. in October. Any other Canadians heading there? Good chance to talk to those who are using the camera.

There is a M8 review by the Leica Rep on the Thursday or Friday night and likely will have a question and answer period. As well as two M8 workshops sponsored by Leica USA on the Tuesday and Wednesday. I think one day is already filled.

I too, would be interested in an M8 meeting, maybe others from Ontario would make the trip to Toronto for an event.

Alex,

You posed several questions regarding the Leica Historical Society of America's (LHSA) Annual Meeting in Rochester, NY, Octobert 10 - 14, 2007. Most of your questions regarding the Annual Meeting may be answered by visiting : :LHSA : : Welcome to LHSA!.

Notwithstanding, there is a one-day workshop for the M8 (limited to 15) at the Annual Meeting that has openings. The date is Tuesday, October 9, 2007, and the cost is $55 (non-refundable). The workshop instructor is Justin Stailey, a Leica USA Product Specialist and working photographer. You must be a member of LHSA to enroll. Membership cost for a year is $65 for Canada, and you receive four issues of the Viewfinder, the quarterly journal of the Society. Examples of articles from the Viewfinder are on the website. There is also an Thursday evening lecture at the Annual Meeting by Justin Stailey concerning the M8 and its use. The cost is $25 a person.

Yes, there will be a number of LHSA members at the Annual Meeting, who use the M8. Please contact me off line if you have other questions.

Best Regards,

Bill Caldwell

Scott,

Can you please provide some infor about the events in Toronto and Rochester?

Alex:

Bill Caldwell in his post provided info about the Leica Meeting in Rochester. I'm going to attend to take in the planned photo trips on the Thursday and Friday. Thursday is a an all day trip to a nature area I believe called Letchworth park which is the "Grand Canyon of the East" supposedly. Friday's highlight is the Eastman Kodak Museum with some planned events by Rolf Fricke who is the program director for LHSA. There is a banquet on Saturday evening after the all day meeting and seminar. Constantine Manos, the Magnum Leica Shooter is the guest speaker after the dinner. I believe he was recently highlighted on the Leica web site with examples of his work taken with an M8.

The information for Michael Reichmann in Toronto is here:

Hope this helps.

Count me in on a get together. I live in the Niagara Peninsula, so the west and central parts of Toronto are only just over an hour away (most times),

My M8 is just on its way back from some service, so hopefully all will be right with the world next week.

John
