rtai Posted October 1, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 1, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I want to do a road trip this early spring through the American Southwest with the SL2 and the zoom. Normally I would shoot large format. Without rise/fall and other movements I’ll just fix the perspective in Lr and crop. Anyway I want the camera on a tripod. Right now my search indicates only novoflex makes a tripod collar for the 24-90 zoom. Would an RRS L bracket for the body be a dangerous option given the weight of the lens? Jeff S Posted October 1, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 1, 2021 I use the SL2 and 24-90 with the RRS L bracket, RRS TVC 24L tripod and Arca Swiss P0 head with RRS clamp. The same setup handles my 90-280, but that's where the tripod collar helps, as Leica recognized by design. But with both IBIS and OIS, along with ISO flexibility, the vast majority of my shooting these days is handheld. My LF days are over. Jeff
rtai Posted October 1, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted October 1, 2021 Good to know the RRS L bracket option is doable with the 24-90mm. It’s easier for me the compose with the set up on a tripod especially when I need to factor in the crop after perspective correction. I have gone digital with smaller formats so don’t want to keep chemicals just for the occasional sheet film. Anyway the trip and resulting photos will tell me if I should sell the rest of my film cameras and LF lenses.

LocalHero1953 Posted October 1, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 1, 2021 I use a normal Arca Swiss QR plate on the SL body with the 24-90 without apparent problems. The 90-280 has its own tripod support - and needs it.

hofo100 Posted October 1, 2021 Share #7 Posted October 1, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Same here, I do use the SL2 with an Arca Swiss Monoball P0 (on a Gitzo Series 3) with an L-bracket (in my case from ArcaSwiss) with all SL lenses (except for the 90-280, for reasons mentioned before) without any issues. In my view, not the L-bracket is the challenge but the right head on the tripod.
LocalHero1953 Posted October 1, 2021 Share #8 Posted October 1, 2021 (edited) For improved stability and less weight I have recently started using a Novoflex Magic Balance levelling base and Novoflex Panorama Qii base. It has only 15 degrees of movement which is good enough for all my needs except for negative scanning or occasional macro/still life. Eliminating the ball eliminates the neck of the ball, which is the weak point for stability in ballheads. The Panorama Qii base provides the clamp, as well as rotation independent of the levelling function. I started using this for large format, but I've been surprised how little I actually need a head with larger adjustments. Obviously, depending on why you use a tripod, YMMV.
