In any case, I had a look at more modern tech camera lenses and they are much larger than the older ones, so I suspect more than anything it is about telecentricity at Matt said, but probably also about sheer image quality...needing to be sharp for over 100-400mp. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

This means that they need to use a retrofocus design to clear electronic contacts and other obstacles inside the lens mount.
