Yes, of course. I realize that. In any case, I had a look at more modern tech camera lenses and they are much larger than the older ones, so I suspect more than anything it is about telecentricity at Matt said, but probably also about sheer image quality...needing to be sharp for over 100-400mp.

Also, the GFX lens mount is shallow, but it's not as shallow as a view camera. This means that they need to use a retrofocus design to clear electronic contacts and other obstacles inside the lens mount.

The filter ring has to be large enough to allow the use of stacked filters without vignetting, so it's probably significantly larger than the front element.
