you know, poli, the 'drilling' was kind of a scratching the surface of the metal (brass?) ring of the power wheel, making three small indentations (because that cursed power wheel rotates too easily in my case, and i needed some reference for the wheel position).  but you are right, i used a drill for that.  the problem looks to me like something rather internal, electronic or electrical in nature...

the shutter is closed while the light meter works as expected, measuring the light reflection on the shutter curtain - even with the lens off.

I see. it seems like something internal indeed then. :(

a Leica miracle happened today !  i just had my problematic M10-D turned on this morning when it suddenly became completely unresponsive while the red LED light was bright like crazy and on constantly.  nothing worked anymore ! not even that cursed/infamous power wheel worked so i was entirely unable to switch off my camera !  i took the battery out just for a few seconds - and voilà, after reinserting and power on, the camera was back up again with its red LED on for a second only.  no GREEN LED blinking anymore, while - halelujah - my favoured Leica toy switched after 2min back into STANDBY mode as it has done so up to two months ago !  all the bad habits described earlier in this forum disappeared - no heating up, no battery draining...  meanwhile i power cycled it twice and things still work as expected.  but i didn't use yet FOTOS for syncing date & time - my problems actually had started with that silly app in first place...

so, this new freeze (on the BIOS/OS level i guess) somehow fixed my M10-D automagically - and made an already planned repair trip to Wetzlar unnecessary - so i hope at least.  i hope very much that such issues don't reoccur in the future...
