Good day. First I apologize since this must be an answered question already.

Let's say I want to adapt an old Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 on a Leica SL2S. I get a dumb adapter ring for it, mount it on the camera successfully.

Do I understand this correctly here: I can only get IBIS enabled if I tell the camera I have a Leica R 100mm mounted on?

From some conversations I understand the IBIS will not be enabled unless the camera knows the focal length of the foreign lens.

With a dumb adapter, is it possible to choose either an M  or R lens? Or do I have to have the R-adapter-L if I want to select an R lens, likewise for M lenses do I need the M-adapter-L?

Many thanks for clearing these questions. I am really interested in a full-frame mirrorless camera for adapting various lenses of yesteryear, not necessarily just M or R lenses, but Nikkors, Pentax, M42, what have you. Leica SL2S as a host platform for various lenses does seem to attract me the most.

I reckon the M lens profiles may have some baked-in corrections that might destroy the aesthetic of a vintage (SLR) lens.

But the R lens profiles less so, if at all.

Is the list of selectable R lenses the same as in this list here, without the 700 € adapter?

You can pick the nearest M or R focal length from a list. In your case, either Leica R 100mm lens should be close enough for a Nikkor 105. Mind you, it's a fast lens, and a fast camera, so you don't need IBIS in decent light.

Thanks. There was an old thread from which I got the impression that one can't even access the R lens list without the adapter.

There's one drawback (at least on my SL2 with current firmware) when using a dumb adapter that might matter to you based on how you shoot. Auto-Iso is not functional. You have to manually select which ISO you'd like to use.

I can also confirm that when using a dumb adapter no lens corrections are applied, no matter if choosing an M or R lens. I posted those findings with an example here as well:
