rosuna Posted August 16, 2006 Share #42 Posted August 16, 2006 Thank you for the response. The Summicron 35mm seems to be good. The problem is this: the MTF graphics show that the Summilux 35mm at f/1.4 is better than the Summicron 35mm at f/2, and that is a bit strange to me. I suppose the Summicron was optimized for smaller size and lower cost, and the Summilux for uncompromized quality. I will buy the M8, but I am not 100% about what lens I will get. The ideal lens for me would be the Summicron 28mm, but it is too expensive. The Summicron 35mm is good and small. The other possibility is the Summilux 50mm (but it would be too long, due to the crop factor).
sean_reid Posted August 16, 2006 Share #43 Posted August 16, 2006 Lee Friedlander also used Leicas. Friedlander and Winogrand employed wide-angles, 35mm and 28mm. I think 28mm is a difficult lens to handle for street photography, but Winogrand used that focal a lot. Hi Ruben, Of course, I forgot Friedlander. Thank you. I think Winogrand is one of the few photographers who was able to tame the 28 handheld - I agree that it's difficult. Cheers, Sean
sean_reid Posted August 17, 2006 Share #44 Posted August 17, 2006 Sean - I've not noticed any HCB wideangles although I may have seen a 35mm,certainly nothing wider than that. I have a couple of his books so I will have a look. the LPP is the Leica Postal Portfolio now called the Leica Society. Hi Anthony, HCB did much of his work with a 35 and 50. Thanks for the LPP explanation. Cheers, Sean

gabek Posted August 17, 2006 Share #46 Posted August 17, 2006 All of this talk makes me a bit heartsick that I parted with my M6 and kit, but the longing will pass, I hope. I bought the body and lenses at the same time, 28/2.8 – 35/1.2 – 90/4. Even though I carried all three lenses most of the time, over the years, I found myself seldom using the 90 and the 28 most often. I did most of my shooting between f5.6 and f8, even if it meant using high speed film or pushing the ASA. Of course, I would have enjoyed owning a bunch of lenses, but believe I would settle on the 28 today if I had to pick just one, given my experience.
