rhl-ferndale Posted September 15, 2021 Share #21 Posted September 15, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) We had to get our tomatoes and peaches home to make dinner for the cousins, so I did not photograph Mocksville as much as I’d like. Another day in fall will do. Every day in retirement is a Saturday, after all. But because I’d been thinking about what happens to old country stores once they can no longer afford competitive gasoline pumps (and cleaning up underground fuel tanks when they fail a Department of Environmental Quality inspection, and their neighbors move to the closest city with plenty of cheaper 24/7 gas franchises, cigarette and beer outlets and more BBQ choices), I photographed this Mocksville wall that restores a 1920 mural for local gasoline. Horn Oil is still in business next door, but has no gas pumps. Maybe they’re supplying the last of the heating oil for old folks who switched over from coal stoves 60 or 70 years ago. There’s a gentle mockery in the Mocksville I saw last week. I’m sure Aunt Snooks and my younger-but-no-longer-young brother Anderson would appreciate it before they went looking for a gas station to help them get as far away as they could by nightfall.
