A very long time Leica user including digital, an M8, but only recently acquired a Q. Super pleased but confused with regard to user settings. I know what I want from the camera and have no trouble saving or over writing saved profiles... but how on earth do I just delete a specific profile once made to create an empty slot.  So far I've only been able to do so by resetting the entire system including date and time etc something I thought should not have happened.  Most frustrating. What am I doing wrong. Help would be appreciated.

Set up the camera the way you like and save to any slot you like.   The current settings -- most of them, anyway -- will be written to the selected slot.  If the slot was "used" then the current settings will overwrite whatever settings had been previously saved in that slot.

Many thanks 'marchyman' I wasn't expecting such a speedy response all the way from sunny California.  Overwriting used slots seems to be the only way to go the way the software/firmware is written. If the slots are to be deleted then a factory reset with the loss of date/time seems to be the price to pay. I guess once my initial experimentation with settings has passed and the camera fully set up to use the way I want then the issue is no longer material. Regards, Dyfrig.

Hi David and thank you for the suggestion although I'm not sure I'll venture into the world of HDR just yet. My wife describes me as ever so slightly OCD and the Q has many 'new to me' features I'm trying to learn although the basic out of box setup has produced some very nice results. My only issue with the 'user settings' has been a desire to delete or clear the info that I have installed as experimental settings within them.  Overwriting is no problem, naming/renaming  is ok but what I was hoping to do was a simple clearance of all info from individual slots bringing them back to unused status.  Seems this can only be done by a factory reset affecting all the slots and also date and time. By posing my question I Was hoping that I had missed some simple way of doing this but it doesn't seem so.  Not the end of the world just one of the quirks of the camera that I'm starting to really enjoy. Having originally come from a long line of film "M's" I had missed the relative simplicity of my old M8 and Leica glass but the Q is likely to more than compensate as I learn how to use it.  There may be more questions posed in the future though !

Regards, Dyfrig.

Dyfrig, thank you your further information. If and when the next firmware upgrade is available, if you do not save your settings to file, you will be able to start afresh with your user presets. HDR was just a suggestion. For my X1, two of my unnamed presents are FAST and FINE for indoors and highest quality needs. I also have one for MONO imaging, but captured as RAW files. Each one saves delving into the menu. Think of occasional situations where the alternative is resetting via the menu. I rarely have vacant slots for new presents.

David , thanks again. I too have an X1 bought new some 10 years ago used very little info M's and large DSLRs all now disposed of but will never sell the X1. The only preset slot used on the X1 is my set up for B&W but still prefer to convert the DNG with Silver Efex Pro 2.  Knowing my luck having just bought new, probably one of the last of the pre Q2s, there will be no further firmware updates... The Q learning curve continues but enjoyable.

Dyfrig

ps just viewed and enjoyed your article on your book. my efforts have been via blurb, enjoyable but nowhere near as organised as you. I too find  'lenswork' an inspiration and often enjoy re visiting my many volumes.

Dyfrig, thank you for visiting my website, and I am pleased that you found it interesting. I have written quite a lot about the X1 on my site, and it attracts a surprising number of visiting, from worldwide.
